Hichilema was declared the winner of Zambia’s August 13, 2026 presidential election after securing 61.4 per cent of the vote, according to official results. His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, received about 38 per cent.
The result gives Hichilema a second five-year term after his first victory in 2021. His re-election comes as his administration seeks to build on economic reforms, including Zambia’s recovery from its 2020 debt default, while addressing persistent concerns over the cost of living, jobs and economic growth.

Ruto hails Hichilema’s victory
In a congratulatory message issued on Tuesday, August 18, Ruto said Hichilema’s victory demonstrated his commitment to the advancement of Zambia.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Kenya, and on my own behalf, I extend my warmest congratulations to you and the people of the Republic of Zambia on the election held on 13th August, 2026, and on your re-election as President of the Republic of Zambia,” Ruto said.
The Kenyan President described Hichilema’s win as “resounding and decisive”, saying it reflected the Zambian leader’s dedication and perseverance.
“Your resounding and decisive victory is a testament to your unwavering dedication, perseverance and commitment to the advancement of Zambia,” Ruto said.
Ruto said the election outcome was also an indication of the confidence Zambians had placed in Hichilema’s leadership.
“It is, above all, an affirmation of the trust and confidence that the people of Zambia have placed in your visionary leadership towards advancing the nation's development and prosperity,” he said.
Ruto reaffirms Kenya-Zambia ties
Beyond congratulating Hichilema, Ruto used the message to reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Zambia.
“Kenya holds its relations with the Republic of Zambia in high esteem,” Ruto said.
He noted that Nairobi and Lusaka had developed “deep and enduring cooperation” at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
According to Ruto, Kenya considers Zambia an important regional partner and ally.
“Kenya regards Zambia not only as a brotherly nation, but also as a valuable partner and ally in the region,” he said.
The President’s remarks underline the importance Nairobi attaches to its relationship with Lusaka as the two countries continue to cooperate on regional and continental issues.
Ruto promises closer cooperation with Hichilema
Ruto said he looked forward to working with Hichilema during his second term to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
“Dear Brother, I look forward to continuing to work closely with you to further solidify and broaden the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” Ruto said.
The Kenyan President also wished Hichilema success in his second term, while expressing hopes for peace and prosperity in Zambia.
“I wish you every success in your second term in office and continued peace, unity and prosperity for the people of Zambia,” Ruto said.
Ruto addressed Hichilema as “Your Excellency and Dear Brother” in the message, reflecting the warm diplomatic tone between Nairobi and Lusaka.
Hichilema begins second term amid economic expectations
Hichilema’s re-election provides continuity for Zambia after his first term, during which his administration pursued debt restructuring and economic reforms following the country’s 2020 debt default.
His second term, however, is expected to come with pressure to ensure that economic improvements translate into better living standards for ordinary Zambians. Reuters reported that investors welcomed the prospect of policy continuity but were looking for stronger economic growth and further investment.
Hichilema’s victory also comes against a backdrop of controversy surrounding the election, including opposition complaints over arrests, alleged intimidation and other irregularities. The Electoral Commission of Zambia temporarily suspended vote counting after reports of attacks on election officials and stolen ballot papers.
For Kenya, however, Ruto’s message has focused on the future of the bilateral relationship.
By congratulating Hichilema and pledging to work closely with him, Ruto has signalled Nairobi’s intention to deepen cooperation with Lusaka during the Zambian President’s second term.
The message also places Kenya among the regional governments seeking closer engagement with Hichilema following his successful bid for another five years in office.
