Presidents Uhuru launches the UHC in all 47 Counties

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday launched the UHC plan in all 47 counties. The announcement was made at the Port Reitz Hospital in Mombasa. The president highlighted that the UHC program adopted by the national government would be rolled out in the 47 counties. President Uhuru was also presiding over the international conference on harmonization of curriculum and training health professionals.

The UHC implementation plan will see major policy and administrative reforms in the medical sector. This will also ensure that there is quality and affordable medical coverage. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe added that the rollout will ease access to health services for millions of Kenyans.

According to Mr. Mutahi, the government will now be scaling up Universal Health Coverage based on the experiences from the pilot schemed launched before in four selected counties, Kisumu, Nyeri, Isiolo, and Machakos. The government will shift focus on further reforming the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). They will establish a mandatory Universal Coverage Scheme, adopting an essential package of health services and providing health coverage for an initial one million low-income households to be biometrically registered.

Under the new launch, Kenyans will be able to access UHC services under the National Insurance Fund supa cover plan in both hospitals. Cs Mutahi also noted that primary care facilities in rural areas will no longer suffer from shortages of staff, essential drugs, and basic medical equipment with the operationalization of the UHC.
