Rigathi Gachagua Slams Ruto Administration Over Economic Mismanagement, Condemns ‘Moneybags’ Politics

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a fierce attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of mismanaging public funds and prioritizing political theatrics over the needs of ordinary Kenyans.

Gachagua was responding to a recent newspaper article that described current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as “Mr Moneybags” for handing out millions during public events. He condemned Kindiki and other Ruto-allied politicians for traversing the country with large sums of money under the guise of economic empowerment.

“There is no money for capitation in our schools, and our principals are being treated to a game of musical chairs by the government,” Gachagua said. “The situation is dire—they are torn between allowing auctioneers into schools over unpaid bills or sending learners home.”

He also painted a bleak picture of the healthcare sector, describing hospitals as “a shell of what has been left after failed systems and fake promises.”

Public servants, Gachagua noted, are bearing the brunt of the crisis, with payslips slashed, salaries delayed, and operations stalled due to a lack of facilitation. Meanwhile, contractors and suppliers are facing auctions over unpaid government bills.

He further alleged that funds collected from taxpayers are being diverted through security agencies to finance early campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election. “That money is being used to bribe boda boda riders, women’s groups, and to pay goons to disrupt meetings of those calling for regime change,” he claimed.

Gachagua accused the government of co-opting musicians and creative artists to endorse its agenda. “They are being bribed to sell what cannot be bought,” he said. “But as sad as it is, Kenyans are encouraged to eat the money but not surrender their souls.”

Citing a Kikuyu proverb, he added: “Where I come from, we don’t bury the elephant with its tusks—pluck them before burial.”

He concluded with a warning against repeating past financial mistakes, reminding Kenyans of the devastating impact of politically motivated cash handouts in the 1992 elections. “History and truth cannot be buried,” he said. “Be vigilant, dear Kenyans.”

Efforts to get a comment from the Deputy President’s office on the allegations were unsuccessful by the time of publishing.
