Ruto Ally Calls for Rigathi Gachagua’s Arrest — Here’s Why

Nairobi, Kenya – May 19, 2025
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could soon face arrest over his alleged role in the violent invasion of Parliament in June 2023, Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has claimed.

“Rigathi Gachagua and a few MPs are about to be charged for what happened on June 25th last year—the invasion of Parliament and the chaos that followed,” Koech said during a public forum.

“The architects of that unrest include the former Deputy President himself. When he speaks, it’s not taken lightly because he has the capacity to incite chaos with his words. He has a very poisonous tongue. If he is not charged, then it means he considers himself above the law.”

Police Presence Sparks Speculation

Koech’s statement comes just a day after a contingent of police officers was spotted near Gachagua’s Wamunyoro and Karen residences on Sunday, intensifying speculation about a looming arrest. Eyewitnesses reported heightened security activity, although authorities have yet to issue an official statement.

The former Deputy President, who was impeached in October 2024, has repeatedly claimed that he is being targeted by the state. He alleges that shadowy operatives have been following him since his official security detail was withdrawn following his ouster.

Ex-KDF Soldiers Now Guard Gachagua

In response, Gachagua has deployed more than 300 volunteers—including former members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and retired security officers—to protect his homes. This unprecedented move has sparked both admiration and alarm, as the country watches the standoff between him and state institutions escalate.

Still Active, Still Vocal

Despite mounting pressure, Gachagua remains politically active. He recently hosted opposition leaders at his Wamunyoro residence and continues to make bold statements criticizing the current administration. His supporters view him as a defiant symbol of resistance, while critics accuse him of incitement and political disruption.

Gachagua has not officially responded to MP Koech’s claims. However, in past interviews, he has dismissed similar accusations as politically motivated attacks meant to silence him.

Background: June 25 Chaos

The events of June 25, 2023, marked a turning point in Kenya’s political climate. Protesters stormed Parliament in opposition to the Finance Bill, triggering violent confrontations with law enforcement. The day ended in chaos, with widespread damage and public outrage.

While no formal charges have been announced against Gachagua, pressure is mounting on investigative agencies to act. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) are yet to release official comments on the matter.
