President William Ruto is set to depart for Evian, France, on Monday night after receiving an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit, where he will represent Africa and push for greater investment, trade opportunities and reforms aimed at boosting economic growth across the continent.
The trip comes at a time when Kenya is seeking increased foreign investment and stronger partnerships to accelerate job creation, infrastructure development and digital transformation.
In a statement issued by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the government said President Ruto’s invitation “reflects the growing recognition of Kenya’s strategic leadership role in global affairs and the confidence placed in his voice on matters concerning Africa and the Global South.”
According to the statement, President Ruto will present Africa’s unified agenda developed during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi last month.
“In that capacity, the President will articulate Africa’s unified position as concretised during the Africa Forward Summit held last month in Nairobi, which established a common continental agenda on economic transformation, financial reform, climate action and digital development,” Hussein Mohamed said.
The G7 Summit brings together leaders from some of the world’s largest economies to discuss global economic challenges, security, climate change and emerging technologies. This year’s meeting is expected to focus heavily on investment, innovation and Artificial Intelligence.
President Ruto will join leaders including France’s Emmanuel Macron, United States President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, United Kingdom Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside other invited leaders.
State House said one of the President’s main priorities will be advocating for reforms to the international financial system to improve Africa’s access to affordable capital.
“The summit will provide an important platform for the President to champion Africa’s case for reforms to the international financial architecture, affordable access to capital and investment, and implementation of the Africa Forward Summit’s recommendations on financial and credit reform to unlock growth, enterprise and job creation across the continent, including expanded financing opportunities for Kenyan businesses and entrepreneurs,” the statement read.
The government added that President Ruto will also advocate for “stronger partnerships between Africa and the world’s leading economies in trade, infrastructure, energy, climate resilience and innovation while advocating for renewed international solidarity and a more inclusive framework for shared global prosperity.”
Artificial Intelligence is also expected to feature prominently during the summit, with Kenya seeking to position itself as a regional technology hub.
“The President will further articulate Africa’s position on the governance and deployment of Artificial Intelligence, advocating for equitable access to emerging technologies and increased investment in digital infrastructure, data centres, innovation ecosystems and skills development to ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy,” Hussein Mohamed stated.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Ruto is expected to hold discussions with leading technology executives, including OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and leaders from Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, Mistral AI, Cohere, Black Forest Labs, Synthesia, Sakana AI, Domyn, Sarvam AI and Kakao.
According to State House, the meetings are intended to position Kenya as “Africa’s leading digital and innovation hub” while pursuing partnerships that “expand opportunities for Kenyan youth, accelerate technology-enabled job creation and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.”
The President will also hold bilateral meetings with several Heads of State and Government aimed at attracting investment into manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, housing, healthcare, digital services and value-added exports.
“The engagements will focus on attracting investment into manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, housing, healthcare, digital services and value-added exports, while unlocking opportunities under the National Infrastructure Fund to support economic growth, create jobs and improve livelihoods for Kenyans,” the statement added.
However, the latest overseas visit is expected to reignite debate over President Ruto’s frequent foreign travel.
Since assuming office, the President has made numerous international trips in pursuit of investment, trade and diplomatic engagements. While the government argues that the visits are essential for strengthening Kenya’s economic diplomacy and attracting foreign direct investment, sections of Kenyans have repeatedly questioned the frequency and cost of the travels, especially during a period marked by economic hardship and concerns over the rising cost of living.
Critics have argued that the President should spend more time addressing domestic challenges, while supporters maintain that international engagements are necessary to secure long-term economic opportunities and strategic partnerships for the country.
State House has defended the latest trip, expressing confidence that it will deliver tangible benefits to both Kenya and the continent.
“The President’s engagements at the G7 Summit are expected to strengthen Kenya’s economic diplomacy agenda, unlock new investment opportunities, deepen strategic partnerships and reinforce Kenya’s position as a gateway to Africa, delivering tangible economic benefits for the people of Kenya while advancing Africa’s collective interests on the global stage,” Hussein Mohamed said.
