DCI Crackdown: Major Arrest in Notorious Nairobi Go-Down Heist Ring, Stolen Goods Recovered

In a significant victory against organized crime, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has successfully apprehended a 10-man gang believed to be the masterminds behind a string of daring go-down heists in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

This major breakthrough follows days of relentless pursuit by DCI detectives, bringing much-needed relief to victims who have been left reeling from substantial losses.

The suspects, aged between 36 and 50, have been identified as key players in a sophisticated burglary operation that targeted warehouses, making away with valuable hardware goods, steel products, lubricants, and motor vehicle spare parts.

The gang, whose activities have sparked widespread fear among godown owners, is accused of meticulously planning and executing the break-ins, leaving a trail of destruction and loss in their wake.

Major Operation Leads to Arrests and Recovery of Stolen Goods

In a meticulously coordinated operation, detectives from DCI’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) Nairobi area and DCI Kasarani worked in tandem to nab the suspects. Those arrested include Paul Njoroge Muthoni (39), Job Onsomu Onkundi (38), Erick Irungu Karanja (37), Daniel Opiyo Oketch (45), James Maina Githua (36), Joseph Maina Wambugu (50), Patrick Karani (39), Peter Karangi (44), Peter Karanja Kanyoro (42), and Mathew Riunge Karinge (46).

“The success of this operation is a testament to the tireless efforts and collaboration of our officers,” stated a senior DCI official. “We remain committed to eradicating organized crime and ensuring the safety of our citizens and their property.”

Following their arrest, the suspects led detectives to Faith Estate in Riverside Court, Juja-Murera, where a significant haul of stolen goods was recovered. Among the items were 463 cartons of lubricants, stolen from a go-down at Thika Industrial Park.

Additionally, four motor vehicles believed to have been used in the commission of these crimes were impounded.

Links to Other Heinous Crimes Uncovered

As the investigation progresses, detectives have uncovered the gang’s involvement in other high-profile crimes. In April 2024, the group reportedly broke into Syzo International premises in Mwiki, stealing hardware items and laptops after forcing entry into two go-downs. A chilling incident in Kamulu on July 26, 2024, saw the gang scale the walls of Patnet Steel Makers, where they tied up two security guards before ambushing night shift workers, tragically resulting in the death of one worker. The gang then made off with tonnes of nails and barbed wire.

“The level of violence and planning involved in these crimes is alarming,” commented another DCI officer. “This gang’s reign of terror has left many businesses devastated, but we want to assure the public that we are closing in on all involved.”

DCI’s Ongoing Commitment to Public Safety

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a proactive and professional approach in combating crime. In a statement, the DCI emphasized their resolve to protect life and property, apprehend offenders, and support their prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

As the search for more suspects and stolen goods continues, the DCI urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. This latest operation underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between law enforcement and the community in making Nairobi safer for all.

“Our message to criminals is clear: there is no place to hide,” the DCI declared, reinforcing their dedication to bringing those responsible to justice.
