Kisii County Assembly members have suspended Assembly Clerk James Nyaoga.
The clerk was suspended on grounds of gross misconduct and violations of the Constitution and the County Assembly Services Act.
In a decisive vote held Thursday evening, 55 out of 70 members voted in favor of Nyaoga’s removal, with only 13 opposing. The session was chaired by the County Assembly Speaker Philip Nyanumba.
The move follows a Notice of Motion tabled last week by Boochi Tendere, the chairman of the County Assembly Service Board, which called for Nyaoga’s removal.
The Speaker subsequently tasked an 11-member select committee, led by Bassi Bogetaorio ward representative Ibrahim Machuki, to investigate the allegations.
The committee’s report linked Nyaoga to the misappropriation of Ksh. 1.8 million, which was intended for the staff’s savings and credit cooperative society.
The chairman informed the Assembly that Nyaoga allegedly transferred the funds to his personal account without authorization from the Assembly Service Board, an act that amounts to economic crime.
Further accusations against Nyaoga include the illegal interdiction of nine officers, staff harassment, and facilitating the impeachment of former Speaker David Kombo.
Nyaoga also allegedly refused to comply with court orders to reinstate Kombo, thereby hindering the Speaker’s ability to perform his duties effectively.
