Raila Odinga Burial Programme: Full Schedule of Events Before the Interment of the Former Prime Minister

The nation continues to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering figure in Kenya’s political history and a symbol of democracy, resilience, and reform. As Kenyans prepare to pay their final respects, the following is the official schedule of events leading up to his interment.

Thursday, 16th October

  • 8:30 a.m. – The body of the late Raila Odinga arrives at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where it will be officially received by President William Ruto.
  • 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. – The body will lie in state for public viewing at the Parliament Buildings, allowing Kenyans to pay their last respects to the nation’s former Prime Minister.

Friday, 17th October

  • A State Funeral Service will be held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, attended by local and international dignitaries.
    President Ruto has declared the day a public holiday to honor the life and legacy of Raila Odinga, allowing citizens across the country to follow the ceremony.

Saturday, 18th October

  • The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will fly the body to Kisumu, where it will be received by local leaders and thousands of mourners.
  • A public viewing will take place at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Grounds, giving residents of the Nyanza region an opportunity to bid farewell to their beloved son.

Sunday, 19th October

  • The final burial ceremony will be conducted by the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) at Raila Odinga’s Bondo home, Siaya County.
    Close family members, friends, and national leaders are expected to attend the solemn ceremony marking the final journey of the man many fondly called Baba.
