Stop Killing Our Hustlers!” — Ndindi Nyoro Explodes Over Police Shooting in Nairobi Protests

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has issued a fierce condemnation of police brutality following the shooting of a young man in Nairobi, calling on national leaders to stop treating struggling Kenyans as disposable.

Speaking during an Education Day event in Kiharu, Murang’a County, Nyoro condemned the tragic incident where a young street vendor—reportedly selling face masks—was shot during Tuesday’s anti-government protests.

“How did we get here? A young man trying to survive is gunned down for working honestly. Are we at war with our own people?” Nyoro asked, drawing emotional reactions from the crowd.

The protests, largely led by Gen Z youth demanding economic reforms and government accountability, turned chaotic in Nairobi’s CBD. Human rights organizations have since reported several injuries and casualties caused by excessive use of force.

Nyoro called on the government to immediately stop targeting low-income earners, often referred to as “hustlers,” who form the backbone of Kenya’s informal economy.

“This country cannot descend into a place where hustlers are hunted in the streets like criminals. We cannot normalize the murder of the poor,” he stated.

While the police have yet to issue a formal report on the shooting, civil society groups such as Amnesty International Kenya have condemned the violence and called for an independent investigation.

“The work of the government is to protect Kenyans, not harm them,” Nyoro emphasized. “Whether you’re from a slum in Nairobi or a village in Murang’a, your life matters. The silence from some leaders is shameful.”

He pledged to follow up the matter in Parliament and demand answers from security agencies.

“We will not allow our people to be brutalized with impunity. Hustlers are not criminals. They are our brothers, our sisters, our children.”

This comes as pressure mounts on state agencies to respect the rights of peaceful demonstrators and uphold the rule of law in handling civil unrest
