NAIROBI, May 2, 2025 — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that preliminary findings into the killing of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were point to a “targeted and premeditated” attack, as detectives intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement released today, DCI announced significant progress in the investigation, revealing that forensic experts and homicide detectives had reconstructed the MP’s final movements from Parliament to the crime scene, unlocking what the agency described as “critical leads.”

“Evidence collected at the scene and analyzed by experts from the National Forensic Laboratory has narrowed the scope of suspects,” said John Marete, HSC, speaking on behalf of the Director of Criminal Investigations. “We are actively pursuing all possible angles to determine the motive behind this heinous act.”
Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul, was fatally shot on the evening of April 29, 2025, a development that has sent shockwaves across the political spectrum and the nation.

According to DCI, an autopsy will be conducted on Monday, May 5, under the supervision of Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor. The postmortem is expected to provide further clarity on the nature of the fatal wounds and support the ongoing inquiry.
“This was not a random crime,” a senior DCI officer privy to the case told The Daily Whistle on condition of anonymity. “The timing, location, and precision point to a well-planned execution. We are closing in on the people involved.”
Leaders across the country have called for calm as the investigation unfolds. Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, said in a brief statement: “We urge the investigative agencies to leave no stone unturned. Charles was a passionate and fearless legislator—his death must not be in vain.”
Local residents in Kasipul have expressed frustration but welcomed the swift action by authorities. “We are heartbroken, but we believe in justice,” said Margaret Anyango, a community leader in Oyugis. “Let this be the last time a leader is taken from us like this.”
DCI has urged the public to refrain from speculation and instead assist with any information that could aid the investigation. Members of the public can report anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203) or through emergency lines 999 and 112.
“This is a matter of national interest,” Marete emphasized. “We owe it to Hon. Were’s family and to all Kenyans to uncover the truth. We will not relent until justice is served.”
