National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has dismissed claims that the government is planning to sell Nzoia Sugar Company, calling the rumours politically driven and misleading.
“No one is selling Nzoia Sugar. That land belongs to the government and the people of Kenya,” he said. “All debts will be paid, and any pending matters will be resolved transparently.”
Speaking in Bungoma, Wetang’ula accused unnamed political actors of spreading falsehoods meant to derail public focus from development milestones in the region. He reassured residents that the government is committed to reviving Nzoia Sugar, not privatizing it.

“With this elevation, our people will no longer need to travel to Eldoret for specialized treatment,” Wetang’ula said. “Quality healthcare is coming closer to home.”
The upgrade is expected to bring in advanced medical equipment, specialized care, and better service delivery under the national government’s watch.
Call for Kibabii University to Launch Medical School
To complement the hospital’s new status, Wetang’ula urged Kibabii University to develop a competitive School of Medicine and train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
“Let us position our institutions to meet the needs of our growing population,” he urged.

Passport Office and ID Access Reform
Wetang’ula also announced the opening of a passport office in Bungoma, ending the need for residents to travel to Nairobi, Kisumu, or Eldoret for travel documents.
“Your passport will be ready within two weeks. This is decentralization at work,” he said.
He further revealed reforms in the national ID issuance process, especially targeting youth who often face delays or bribes when applying.

“Every Kenyan deserves an ID. Going forward, all Form Four students will receive their ID cards before exiting school,” he declared. “This is how we open doors and ensure no one is left behind.”
Bungoma City Status on the Horizon
With growing infrastructure and services, Wetang’ula said Bungoma is now firmly on the path to acquiring city status.
“Bungoma has what it takes to become a City, and that is the direction we are headed,” he said. “City status will bring infrastructure, investment, and new opportunities for our people.”
He concluded by calling for unity and continued support for national development goals.
“Let us support our President as we walk this journey together.”
