Busia County, Kenya – Leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Busia County have announced they will boycott a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, which is expected to be led by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and attended by senior officials, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.

The move underscores growing tensions between local and national party structures.

Busia County ODM Secretary, Fidelis Opetu, confirmed that county leaders will not attend the meeting, claiming it was organized to sideline local party voices.

“We will not participate in activities designed to destabilize county leadership,” Opetu said, stressing the importance of respecting the autonomy of local party offices.

Oburu Odinga Calls for Unity

In response to the ongoing disagreements, Dr. Oburu Odinga urged ODM members to prioritize party cohesion.

“Differences of opinion are natural in party politics, but they must be resolved with respect and solidarity,” Oburu said.

He added that Edwin Sifuna has played an important role in coordinating key party activities, and constructive dialogue should guide any disputes.

Accusations Against National Leadership

Despite Oburu Odinga’s call for unity, Busia leaders accused Sifuna and his allies of marginalizing county leadership and acting in ways that favor a small faction at the national level.

The faction argues that such moves threaten party unity ahead of upcoming elections.

Warning to Senior Political Figures

The county leadership also cautioned former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Governor James Orengo to refrain from interfering in ODM’s internal affairs.

They stressed that party decisions should reflect the collective voice of members, not external influence.

Political Implications

The boycott highlights a deepening factional divide within ODM, with county leaders asserting authority across the party. Analysts say that these tensions could affect party cohesion and strategy in the coming elections.
