NAIROBI, Kenya — Learning at Lenana School has been suspended indefinitely following a night of unrest that rocked the prestigious national boys’ school, prompting the administration to send all students home as investigations into the incident begin.
Parents and guardians were on Tuesday morning directed to collect their children from the institution after the school’s Board of Management and administration announced a temporary closure aimed at restoring normalcy and assessing the situation.
In a communication sent to parents, the school said the decision was reached after disturbances were reported during evening prep sessions on Monday night.
“Following the restlessness and disturbance experienced during preps in the school last night, the Board of Management and the school administration have resolved to temporarily release all students to allow for restoration of normalcy and a comprehensive assessment of the situation,” the statement read.
The administration further instructed parents to ensure students leave the school compound only under the supervision of a parent, guardian, or authorized representative.
“You are therefore requested to pick your son from the school at 8:00 a.m. today. Kindly ensure that all students leave the school compound accompanied by a parent, guardian, or an authorized representative,” the notice added.
What Happened at Lenana School?
While school authorities have not disclosed the exact cause of the unrest, reports indicate that students became restless during evening prep classes, leading to disturbances within the school compound.
By Tuesday morning, concerned parents had begun arriving at the institution to pick up their children following the administration’s directive.
As of publication, neither the school administration nor education authorities had confirmed whether any students or staff members were injured during the incident, or whether property was damaged.
Parents Seek Answers
The abrupt closure has left many parents seeking answers regarding the circumstances that triggered the unrest and how long the disruption to learning may last.
Some parents who arrived at the school expressed concern over the recurring cases of student unrest witnessed in learning institutions across the country in recent years.
Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for enhanced guidance and counseling programmes, improved communication between students and school administrations, and stronger mechanisms for addressing grievances before they escalate.
Rising Concern Over School Safety
The incident comes at a time when school safety remains under national scrutiny following a series of unrest cases and tragic incidents reported in various schools across Kenya.
Authorities have recently intensified inspections and safety assessments in boarding schools, with the Ministry of Education emphasizing the importance of student welfare and effective school management.
Education experts argue that understanding the root causes of student unrest is critical in preventing future disruptions and ensuring a conducive learning environment.
When Will Lenana School Reopen?
The school has not announced a reopening date.
Officials say students will remain at home as administrators and the Board of Management conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
Parents and students have been advised to await further communication from the school regarding reopening plans and any additional directives.
Lenana School, one of Kenya’s leading national schools, has produced numerous prominent leaders, professionals, and public figures over the years. The institution’s temporary closure is expected to affect learning programmes until normal operations resume.
