Televangelist and politician-aspirant Victor Kanyari has presided over a graduation ceremony at Skydavik College in Kasarani, where students who completed various vocational and technical courses were awarded certificates.
The ceremony brought together graduates from different programmes, many of whom described their journey as challenging but transformative, especially due to financial constraints.
One of the graduates, Eugene Makoro, said the institution gave him a second chance after nearly dropping out.
“I am so happy to get my certificate from Pastor Kanyari’s college. I had challenges with money, but through your support I have managed to complete my course,” he said.
Focus on skills training for youth
Speaking during the event, Kanyari said Skydavik College was established to provide free and affordable skills training to young people, particularly those from low-income and informal settlements.
He emphasized that vocational training plays a critical role in addressing unemployment and improving livelihoods.
“Today, I had the honor of awarding certificates to students from our free college institution. Education and skills are the foundation of a brighter future,” he said, adding that graduates are now better positioned to pursue employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Claims of growing enrolment
Kanyari stated that since the college began operations, more than 4,000 students have graduated, while over 200 learners are currently enrolled in various courses.
However, these figures have not been independently verified.
Wide range of vocational courses
Skydavik College offers multiple technical and vocational training programmes aimed at equipping youth with practical job skills. The courses include:
- Beauty and Hairdressing
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Welding
- Languages
- Tailoring
- Catering
- Plumbing
- Fashion Design
- Driving
- Carpentry
- Other vocational and technical programmes
Mobile recruitment drive planned
Kanyari also announced plans to increase student enrolment through mobile outreach campaigns using public-address vehicles that will move around Kasarani to promote the college.
“From tomorrow, my public addressing system cars will be moving around calling people to enroll to the college,” he said.
He added that the initiative aims to reach more unemployed youth and connect them to practical training opportunities.
Linking skills training to crime reduction
The televangelist said empowering young people with skills is one of the most effective ways to reduce crime and social challenges in Kasarani.
He maintained that many youths could transform their lives if given access to vocational education and income-generating opportunities.
Political undertones amid community programmes
Kanyari, who has expressed interest in the Kasarani parliamentary seat, said his initiatives are not solely politically driven but part of broader community development efforts.
“I am not only doing this because of elections, but to better society,” he said.
His remarks come as he increasingly positions himself through education and empowerment programmes in the constituency.
Trolleys and motorbikes for youth groups
In addition to the college programme, Kanyari highlighted his ongoing community support initiatives, including the distribution of over 400 handcarts to small-scale traders such as smokie vendors and “mkokoteni” operators.
He also announced plans to distribute more than 100 motorcycles to youths over the weekend as part of an economic empowerment programme.
“I have more than 100 motorbikes that I want to give to the youths so that they can empower themselves,” he said.
He urged beneficiaries to use the resources responsibly, noting that additional support programmes would follow for other deserving youths
