Trouble in United Opposition? Muturi’s Kalonzo Endorsement Sparks Fears of a Major Political Fallout Ahead of 2027
The battle for the 2027 presidency appears to have begun much earlier than expected after former Cabinet Secretary and former Attorney General Justin Muturi openly declared his support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, triggering fresh debate over the future of the United Opposition.
Speaking during an engagement with opposition leaders, Muturi said he would back Kalonzo’s presidential bid if he is not chosen as the coalition’s flagbearer.
“If I am not fronted by the United Opposition as its preferred presidential candidate, then I will support Kalonzo Musyoka for President. He is the most qualified,” Muturi stated.
The remarks have sent political shockwaves through the opposition camp, with some observers interpreting them as the first public sign that the race to succeed President William Ruto in 2027 has already shifted into high gear.

The United Opposition brings together several influential figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Justin Muturi.
Until now, the coalition’s leaders have largely avoided publicly endorsing any individual for the presidency, insisting that the issue of the flagbearer would be settled through consultations and consensus.
Kalonzo has repeatedly called for unity within the opposition, saying that the coalition’s success depends on rallying behind one candidate.
“The most important thing is unity. We must come together and agree on one person who can lead the country forward,” Kalonzo has previously said.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also urged leaders to avoid premature succession politics.
“We should not be discussing who becomes president now. Our first task is to unite the country and build a strong team,” Gachagua said during one of the opposition’s recent engagements.
Martha Karua has similarly warned against allowing personal ambitions to overshadow the coalition’s broader agenda.
“We must put Kenya first. The process of identifying a candidate should be transparent and acceptable to everyone,” she previously stated.
Eugene Wamalwa has also maintained that the coalition’s strength lies in its unity, arguing that internal competition should not derail the opposition’s shared objective of forming the next government.
Against this backdrop, Muturi’s endorsement of Kalonzo carries significant political implications. While he later clarified that his support for the Wiper leader was a personal opinion and not the official position of the coalition, analysts say the statement could embolden other leaders and supporters to openly campaign for their preferred candidates.
The declaration has also raised questions over whether the opposition can maintain its unity once the contest for the presidential ticket intensifies.
Could Muturi’s remarks be the beginning of a fierce succession battle within the opposition? Will other leaders now come out to endorse their preferred candidates? And can the coalition survive the inevitable scramble for the 2027 ticket?
As political temperatures continue to rise, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the fight for the soul of the United Opposition may have just begun.
