A wave of retaliatory killings has rocked Tseikuru in Kitui County, leaving multiple people dead and prompting a forceful response from the National Police Service (NPS), which now warns the violence “must be stopped immediately.”
In a strongly worded press statement released Sunday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Yaga said the country is witnessing a dangerous and escalating cycle of revenge attacks between members of the Kamba and Somali communities.
“The National Police Service is deeply perturbed by deaths reported at Tseikuru Sub-county,” the statement reads, adding that “a pattern of retaliatory attacks… must not only be condemned but also stopped immediately.”
Police outlined a chilling timeline behind the bloodshed.
“On 29th March 2026, a 44-year-old Kamba herdsman was killed near Mwingi Game Reserve,” NPS stated. “The following day, 30th March 2026, a suspected retaliatory attack left four members of the Somali community dead.”
Nearly a month later, the violence reached a deadly peak.
“Yesterday, 25th April 2026, an attack on Kwa Kamari area left seven people dead — all believed to be from the Kamba community.”
“The Service takes great exception to such senseless and needless loss of life, which must be stopped immediately,” the statement emphasized.
In response, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered the immediate deployment of a high-level security team to the volatile region.
“The IG-NPS has already dispatched a high-powered security team led by Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, who is already on the ground this morning at Kwa Kamari, Tseikuru,” the statement confirmed.
Additional reinforcements are being sent, signaling a decisive security operation to restore order.
“The whole aspect of these attacks will be investigated exhaustively and to a logical conclusion,” NPS assured, vowing accountability for those behind the killings.
Even as security is heightened, police are appealing directly to residents to break the cycle of revenge.
“The NPS will take all necessary measures to combat this violence and calls for calm and restraint from both communities,” the statement said.
Community leaders have also been challenged to step in and de-escalate tensions.
“They are reminded to speak the language of peace and reconciliation as criminal culpability and ultimate justice are pursued,” NPS added.
Authorities are now urging the public to come forward with any information that could help investigators.
“Any person with any information regarding these incidents is asked to give the police the necessary support,” the statement said, directing citizens to report to the nearest police station or through toll-free lines 999 or 911.

Reaffirming its mandate, the National Police Service underscored its commitment to restoring calm in the troubled region.
“The National Police Service assures the public of its steadfast commitment to peace, law, and order while remaining focused on speedy investigations and accountability.”
The situation in Tseikuru remains tense as security agencies race to contain further escalation and prevent more loss of life.
