A political violence incident has disrupted opposition leaders' activities in Migori County after suspected goons attacked the convoy accompanying Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The incident happened during Kalonzo's two-day Ukombozi Tour of Migori and Homa Bay counties, an initiative aimed at mobilising political support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to Citizen Digital's November 5 report titled Kalonzo, opposition leaders attacked as goons clash with police during Migori tour, the opposition leaders encountered violence during their political engagements in Migori, with suspected goons clashing with police officers.

The publication reported that the confrontation disrupted activities surrounding the leaders' public meetings, raising concerns about the security of political gatherings.

Kalonzo condemned the incident, describing the violence as an attack on constitutional freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and political participation.

He particularly criticised the police for deploying tear gas against supporters attending the political gathering, questioning why security officers would use such force against people participating in what he described as a peaceful meeting.

The former Vice-President also suggested that the confrontation followed a pattern in which suspected attackers first throw stones before police officers respond with tear gas.

Capital FM independently reported the incident on November 5 in an article titled Kalonzo's Ukombozi tour attacked by goons in Migori.

According to the publication, opposition leaders were forced to condemn political violence after their Ukombozi Tour encountered disruptions in Migori Town.

The incident occurred during the final stop of their Migori engagements, following visits to Ntimaru in Kuria, Kehancha and Posta Grounds.

Kalonzo maintained that the attackers were relatively few but warned that allowing political violence to threaten the lives of elected leaders and their supporters was unacceptable.

He further maintained that the opposition would not abandon its scheduled political activities because of intimidation.

The damage caused to vehicles accompanying the opposition leaders also emerged as a major concern following the confrontation.

In its November 5 report, Kenyans.co.ke, in an article titled Justin Muturi's Convoy Attacked During Campaign Trail in Migori County, reported that photographs from the incident showed damaged vehicle windows, apparently following stone throwing.

The publication identified the politicians accompanying Kalonzo as Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, Democratic Action Party of Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa and other opposition figures.

It further reported that Kalonzo accused the police of failing to protect their gathering, suggesting that the deployment of tear gas contributed to the confusion that allowed suspected attackers to target the vehicles.

Despite the confrontation, the opposition leaders maintained that they would proceed to Homa Bay County as scheduled.

The developments have also attracted attention because of the political significance of the region, which overwhelmingly supported the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in previous elections.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has made a serious accusation concerning the people allegedly responsible for the Migori attack.

People Daily, in its November 5 report titled Muturi fingers Junet after goons attack his convoy in Migori, reported that Muturi accused Suna East MP Junet Mohammed of sponsoring the alleged attackers.

According to the publication, Muturi claimed that individuals linked to the legislator targeted his team while he accompanied Kalonzo and other opposition leaders during their political engagements in Migori.

Muturi described the incident as an act of political intolerance and an attack on democratic freedoms.

The publication also reported that his vehicle sustained damage, including a smashed windscreen, during the confrontation.

However, the accusation against Junet remains a claim made by Muturi, and no independent evidence establishing the legislator's involvement has been presented in the reports cited.

As of the time of reporting, Junet had not publicly responded to the allegation. Police had also not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the deployment of tear gas.

The Migori incident comes at a politically significant moment as opposition leaders attempt to expand their influence in regions that have traditionally supported other political formations.

Daily Nation, in its November 5 report titled Kalonzo heads to South Nyanza in fresh hunt for votes, highlighted the political significance of the former Vice-President's two-day tour of South Nyanza.

According to the publication, Kalonzo began his engagements in Migori County, with scheduled meetings in Ntimaru and Kehancha before proceeding to Posta Grounds in Migori Town.

His programme also included a visit to the mausoleum of independence hero Tom Mboya in Homa Bay County on Friday.

The publication noted that the tour comes amid growing divisions within the opposition, following disagreements surrounding Kalonzo's political position and the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement party secretariat.

The developments have placed additional attention on the opposition's efforts to establish a stronger political presence in the region ahead of 2027.

Kalonzo, however, has maintained that the violence will not discourage him or his political allies from continuing their engagements.

He has called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that political leaders and their supporters can exercise their constitutional freedoms without intimidation.

Nairobi Leo also reported on November 5 that Kalonzo played an old audio recording of the late Raila Odinga endorsing him during his Migori tour.

The move was seen as part of his efforts to appeal to voters in Luo Nyanza, where Raila enjoyed considerable political support.

The latest confrontation has therefore introduced another challenge into the increasingly competitive political environment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Beyond the accusations and political disagreements, the incident has raised questions about the ability of security agencies to protect political gatherings and ensure that competing political groups can conduct their activities peacefully.

With opposition leaders promising to continue their regional tours, attention now turns to whether authorities will investigate the Migori confrontation and establish who was responsible for the violence.

Who was behind the attack on Kalonzo and Muturi's convoy in Migori, and will the authorities investigate the allegations against Junet Mohammed?
