NAIROBI, Kenya – July 8, 2025
At least 11 people were killed, and 567 others arrested during violent Saba Saba protests that erupted across several towns in Kenya on Monday, according to a police statement issued by the National Police Service (NPS).
In a detailed press release, NPS confirmed that the protests — which began as peaceful demonstrations marking the annual Saba Saba Day — were infiltrated by what it described as “criminal elements” who engaged in looting, destruction of property, and attacks on law enforcement officers.

Gitonga Mukunji Among Those Arrested
While the police did not disclose the reasons for Hon. Gitonga Mukunji’s arrest, the move is expected to spark political debate, given the MP’s vocal stance on civic freedoms. Opposition leaders have already condemned the crackdown, calling for accountability from security agencies.
Public Urged to Report Suspects Still at Large
The police urged members of the public to help track down individuals involved in criminal activity during the protests. Citizens with information have been encouraged to report to the nearest police station
NPS Vows to Uphold Law and Order
“The National Police Service remains steadfast and resolute in serving and protecting all Kenyans, residents, visitors, and their property,” read the statement signed by Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson.
As investigations continue, Kenyans are urged to remain calm and vigilant in the face of heightened political tension
