Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has called on President William Ruto to introduce a nationwide waiver for outstanding hospital bills owed for deceased patients whose bodies have remained in mortuaries for more than six months.

Mosiria made the appeal after joining former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and other leaders at a fundraising event for the late Florence Njeru at Ashaki Gardens, formerly Garden Square.

According to Mosiria, the Njeru family has been unable to bury their loved one due to an outstanding hospital bill of KSh6 million.

He said the body of Njeru is currently being detained at Coptic Hospital as the family struggles to raise the money required to settle the bill.

“I humbly appeal to H.E. the President of the Republic of Kenya to issue an Executive Order directing all hospitals, both public and private, to grant a 100 per cent waiver of outstanding hospital bills for any deceased person whose body has been detained for more than six months due to inability to settle the bill,” Mosiria said.

He further called for hospitals to immediately release such bodies to their families once the six-month threshold is reached.

“No family should be subjected to the additional pain of being unable to bury their loved one because of a hospital bill they cannot afford to pay,” he said.

Mosiria argued that prolonged detention of bodies places an additional emotional and financial burden on grieving families.

“Where a body has remained in a mortuary for more than six months, it is a clear indication that the family is in need of urgent intervention and support,” he added.

The county official urged the national government to treat the issue as one requiring compassion and decisive intervention.

“This calls for compassion, dignity and decisive action from our national leadership,” Mosiria said.

“Every family deserves the opportunity to mourn, bury their loved ones with dignity, and begin the process of healing.”

He further urged President Ruto to urgently consider the proposed Executive Order as a lasting solution for families across Kenya facing similar circumstances.

“Let the deceased rest in peace, and let families bury their loved ones with dignity,” Mosiria said.
