Seven people were injured on Sunday morning and several vehicles burnt after a gas tanker exploded at Mutarakwa along Nairobi-Mai Mahiu road. According to eyewitnesses, who were present at the accident scene, the tanker transporting liquefied petroleum gas from Mombasa to Kisumu had overturned on Sunday morning.
Using a crane, efforts to lift it proved futile after the gas cylinders placed at its rear exploded. Several cars parked nearby caught fire, with seven reduced to a shell. Confirming the incident, Limuru Sub County Police Commander Antony Gitonga said that Seven people had been injured during the explosion and were immediately rushed to Thogoto Mission Hospital, undergoing treatment.
Calling on the Nakuru and Kiambu County Governments; the area residents now wants there to be established a fire station along the highway to control and help minimize such atrocities in the future. The section of the road has since been closed to all motorists.
