NAIROBI, June 1, 2025 — Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a wave of high-profile housebreakings and thefts that have unsettled residents in Utawala and neighboring estates.
The arrests follow a report from a tenant at Haiza Apartments who returned home to find his house ransacked and valuables—including electronics and personal items—stolen.

Responding swiftly, Embakasi detectives launched a targeted investigation. Using forensic digital tracking and surveillance footage, they traced the suspects’ getaway vehicle, a Mazda CX5, all the way to Thogoto, Kiambu County.
There, they found the car—fitted with fake number plates (KDC 077P instead of its true registration, KDD 677P)—parked outside a local bar. Four suspects were seated inside. As officers closed in, two bolted into the night. But the driver, Kelvin Kasyoki, and his accomplice, Wilson Waweru, were successfully apprehended.
“They used fake plates, swapped numbers, and thought they were invisible,” said Embakasi Sub-County Police Commander. “But their luck ran out.”
A search of the vehicle revealed tools typically used in precision burglaries:
- Blank number plates and alphabets in white and yellow backgrounds
- Master keys capable of unlocking both cars and houses
- Multiple crowbars and pliers used for forced entry
“This wasn’t random theft—it was calculated, organized, and mobile,” said a senior DCI officer. “These suspects are part of a wider network we’re closing in on.”
Residents of Utawala have welcomed the arrests but remain cautious.
“It’s been tense. Doors are double-locked even during the day,” said John Mwangi, a resident of Mihang’o. “We’re grateful to the police, but we hope the rest of the gang is caught too.”
Police confirmed that the Mazda CX5 and all recovered exhibits have been secured as part of the ongoing investigation. The suspects are currently in custody at Embakasi Police Station and will be charged in court.
Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing new leads to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the syndicate.
