War on Chang’aa: Police Smash Major Illicit Alcohol Network Across Machakos, Kisumu and Vihiga

The National Police Service has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol, with coordinated operations targeting illegal brewing and distribution networks across Machakos, Vihiga, and Kisumu counties.

Authorities say the ongoing enforcement drive is part of sustained efforts to dismantle supply chains linked to the production and sale of dangerous unregulated brews.

“The National Police Service continues to conduct intelligence-led operations across the country aimed at eliminating illicit alcohol and protecting public safety,” police said.

Machakos: Illegal brewing hub along Ngomeni River targeted

In Machakos County, officers from Tala Police Station carried out a targeted operation along the Ngomeni River, an area identified as a suspected hotspot for illicit alcohol production.

“Acting on credible intelligence, officers raided the Ngomeni River area where illegal brewing activities were believed to be ongoing,” police stated.

During the operation, officers recovered 600 litres of molasses, metallic drums, and other equipment believed to be used in large-scale brewing of illicit alcohol.

“Additionally, 20 litres of chang’aa that had already been processed for distribution were seized at the scene,” the service confirmed.

Police say the recovery points to an organized production network operating within the area.

Vihiga and Kisumu: Four suspects arrested in coordinated raids

In separate operations in Vihiga and Kisumu counties, police arrested four suspects found in possession of illicit brews.

“Four suspects were arrested during coordinated operations after being found in possession of approximately 65 litres of chang’aa,” police said.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue into possible supply networks.

Public health warning as crackdown intensifies

Security agencies have warned that despite sustained enforcement, illicit alcohol remains a major threat to public health, safety, and security in several regions.

“The production, distribution and consumption of unregulated alcoholic brews continues to endanger lives, destroy livelihoods, and fuel alcohol-related crimes and incidents,” police warned.

Authorities further noted that illicit alcohol is linked to serious health complications, economic losses, and rising insecurity in affected communities.

Police vow sustained nationwide enforcement

The National Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on illicit alcohol networks through continuous, intelligence-driven operations.

“We remain committed to eliminating this menace through sustained operations, enhanced surveillance, and strengthened community cooperation,” the service said.

Members of the public have been urged to report illegal brewing and distribution activities to security agencies as the crackdown continues across the country.
