Man Accused of Defaming Evans Kidero on Facebook Released on Ksh 400,000 Bail

A man was on Monday charged in a Nairobi court for allegedly publishing offensive content on Facebook against former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Bonface Mondi Nyangla was accused of willfully posting remarks deemed “grossly offensive” and damaging to Kidero’s reputation.

The court heard that Nyangla, using a Facebook account under the name “Omondi Nyangla,” published the alleged remarks on April 20, 2025.

According to the charge sheet, the post was made in the Luo language and was intended to injure the reputation of the former governor.

Prosecutors said the remarks were widely circulated online and portrayed Kidero in a negative light, attracting public ridicule.

The state maintained that the accused acted maliciously and violated sections of the law designed to prevent cyber harassment and defamation.

Nyangla denied the charges and asked the court to release him on lenient bail terms, arguing that he was not a flight risk.

The prosecution, however, opposed the request for leniency, emphasizing the serious nature of the offense and the potential harm caused to Kidero’s public image.

After considering the submissions, the magistrate granted Nyangla release on a cash bail of Ksh 400,000.

The court also barred him from posting any material related to the case on any social media platform until the matter is concluded.

Prosecutors were directed to supply all evidence, including translations of the Facebook content, to the defense ahead of the next hearing.

The case will be mentioned on a later date to confirm the parties’ readiness for trial.
