The Vatican has officially announced that the papal conclave to elect a new Pope will commence on May 7, 2025, with Cardinals gathering inside the Sistine Chapel to choose the successor to the Holy See.
The decision was made during the fifth General Congregation of Cardinals meeting in Rome on Monday, according to a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office.

The Cardinals, currently assembled for preparatory discussions, agreed unanimously to set the date after several days of consultations regarding the needs of the Catholic Church and the electoral process.
The upcoming conclave is a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church, as Cardinals under the age of 80 will cast secret ballots to select the new spiritual leader. The Sistine Chapel will remain closed to visitors for the duration of the proceedings.

How the Conclave Works
During the conclave, voting Cardinals will be secluded within the Vatican grounds, cut off from any outside communication to ensure confidentiality.
Ballots will be cast in multiple rounds daily until one candidate secures a two-thirds majority, as required by Church law. Each voting session’s result will be signaled through smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney — black smoke indicating no decision, and white smoke announcing the election of a new Pope.

The Vatican has already begun logistical preparations, installing necessary equipment to preserve the secrecy of the proceedings, including electronic jamming devices and security sweeps.
This election follows the resignation of the previous Pontiff, an event that has only occurred a handful of times in the Church’s two-thousand-year history, adding historic significance to the May 7 conclave.

The General Congregations leading up to the conclave have provided Cardinals with a platform to discuss key challenges facing the global Church, including issues of governance, evangelization, and global unity.
The Holy See has called on Catholics worldwide to dedicate prayers for wisdom and guidance as the Cardinals undertake their solemn duty to elect the next Bishop of Rome.
Further official updates regarding the conclave’s progress and the eventual announcement of the new Pope will be provided by the Holy See Press Office.
