Chebochok Ousted: Activists Score Big in Tegat Tea Factory Election Overturn

Agriculture Principal Secretary, Dr Paul Ronoh has confirmed the annulment of John Chebochok’s election as Director of Tegat Tea Factory.

This decision comes after nearly two months of persistent joint advocacy by civil society organisations who unified to amplify the issue through a series of actions including online petitions launched by Nguvu Change Leaders.

The online petition attracted more than 4300 signatures, social media advocacy, letters, and emails to relevant stakeholders in authority, and a recent court motion by 6 organisations under the umbrella of Coalition of Organisations Working on Sexual Violence in Kenya and Crusaders for Human Rights and Public Interest Cases.

On July 10,  Nguvu Change Leaders urged the shareholders of the embattled tea factory, in a joint call to make a choice that champions justice and integrity and to denounce the selection of John Chebochok as the director of Tegat Tea Factory.

A month later, the Agriculture Principal Secretary has announced the annulment of his election.

This decision marks a significant step towards ensuring justice for the survivors of gender-based violence, and the safety of thousands of women who are employed in the tea sector.

“The annulment of John Chebochok’s election is a powerful reminder that our voices matter. This win is a profound affirmation of the power of unity and advocacy and sends a clear message that exploitation and abuse will not be tolerated.”

” We extend our deepest gratitude to every organization and individual who unified to support this cause. This victory belongs to all of us. We are proud of this collective achievement and remain committed to advancing justice and protecting the rights of all workers.”

“We trust Kericho High Court’s forthcoming ruling on the suspension of swearing in of Chebochok will reinforce justice and integrity. ” – Nguvu Change Leaders
