Sifuna disclosed the meeting in a statement after sitting down with Kalonzo over a cup of tea, describing their conversation as part of efforts to bring together leaders opposed to what he called the “mambo matatu” regime.
“Catching up with ndugu Kalonzo Musyoka over a cup this morning at his Nairobi residence,” Sifuna said.
The Nairobi Senator said he and Kalonzo were in agreement that leaders who “mean well” must work together to protect the country's democratic institutions.
“We are in agreement that all of us who mean well must work together to save our country from this ‘mambo matatu’ regime and restore our constitutional democracy,” Sifuna said.
He then ended the statement with two words that could fuel further speculation about the direction of opposition politics.
“Whatever it takes,” he added.
Sifuna and Kalonzo meeting raises 2027 questions
The meeting comes as political parties and opposition leaders increasingly turn their attention to the 2027 General Election, with questions continuing over whether the opposition can overcome individual ambitions and present a united political front.
Kalonzo remains one of the experienced figures in Kenya's opposition politics, while Sifuna has become an influential voice in Nairobi and within the wider political debate.
Their meeting is therefore likely to attract attention as politicians begin holding consultations ahead of the next presidential and parliamentary contests.
Sifuna's remarks suggest that discussions around cooperation among opposition leaders could intensify in the coming months.
However, the meeting alone does not establish that Sifuna and Kalonzo have entered into a new political agreement or coalition.
Neither leader announced a new political arrangement following the meeting.
‘Whatever it takes’
The phrase “Whatever it takes” could nevertheless become the most closely watched part of Sifuna's message.
Coming after his declaration that opposition-minded leaders must work together to “save” the country and restore constitutional democracy, the statement leaves room for questions about how far Sifuna believes opposition leaders should go in pursuing unity.
The meeting also comes amid wider efforts by opposition politicians to position themselves ahead of 2027, an election expected to produce intense negotiations over presidential, parliamentary and county positions.
For now, Sifuna's meeting with Kalonzo points to continued political consultations rather than a confirmed new alliance.
But with the 2027 contest drawing closer, even informal meetings between prominent opposition figures are likely to attract heightened political attention.
