Cyrus Jirongo death: Police release fresh findings, rule out foul play

Kenya’s National Police Service has released fresh findings into the death of former Cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo, saying investigators have found no evidence of foul play.

Mr Jirongo died on the night of 13 December 2025 at Karai, along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, sparking intense public debate and political reaction.

In an update issued on Monday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said it “promptly launched thorough investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.”

A multi-disciplinary team made up of homicide detectives, intelligence officers and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed.
Investigators moved quickly to secure the scene, preserve evidence and reconstruct events leading up to the incident.

“The team visited and processed the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol petrol station for review and analysis,” the DCI said.

Police said the bus manifest and amateur video recordings captured by members of the public were also obtained and subjected to forensic analysis.
Statements were recorded from key witnesses, including Mr Jirongo’s wife, Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident.

Detectives also recorded statements from the bus driver and conductor, petrol station staff, and seven passengers who later presented themselves to assist the investigation.

The DCI said several political leaders who had interacted with Mr Jirongo hours before his death “voluntarily came forward to provide the investigators with their accounts of the events.”

A statement was additionally recorded from Julius Kiprotich Chelule, the driver of an alleged rescue bus that arrived at the scene.

“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI said, adding that the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further direction.

The National Police Service urged the public and political leaders to remain calm, warning that “speculative or unsubstantiated statements” could interfere with ongoing investigations, as it extended condolences to Mr Jirongo’s family.
