Five Suspects Arrested in Richard Otieno’s Murder as DCI Uncovers Key Evidence

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested five suspects linked to the brutal murder of Richard Haga Otieno, whose body was discovered on the night of January 18, 2025, in Nairobi’s Umoja Estate. The arrests follow an intensive forensic and intelligence-led operation aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.

The prime suspects—Geoffrey Mavado, John Ndegwa, and Jorim Ngonga Sura—are believed to have orchestrated and executed the killing. Meanwhile, boda boda operators Clinton Simantu, alias Muiruri, and Peter Mwaniki, alias Pinchez, have been identified as the individuals who transported the assailants to and from the crime scene. The suspects are now in custody as authorities finalize preparations for their arraignment.

Investigators have uncovered chilling details linking some of the suspects to a prior assault on Otieno. On November 8, 2024, Mavado and Ndegwa were arrested and charged with attacking the deceased. However, they were sentenced to only a one-year probation. Now, forensic evidence has placed them at the crime scene on the night of the murder, strengthening the case against them.

Speaking on the arrests, DCI spokesperson Patrick Wanjohi confirmed that the evidence collected is irrefutable. “We have solid forensic and digital evidence placing the key suspects at the crime scene. Their prior altercation with the victim further establishes motive, and we are confident that justice will be served,” he stated. An investigator involved in the case, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the crime as a premeditated attack. “This was not random violence. The suspects coordinated their movements meticulously, and we are uncovering more layers to this case,” the officer revealed.

The arrests have brought a measure of relief to Otieno’s grieving family, though they remain steadfast in their demand for justice. “We have lived in agony, waiting for answers. Now, we want to see justice served,” said Sarah Otieno, the victim’s sister. Family spokesperson Paul Odhiambo echoed her sentiments, stating, “No family should endure this pain. We trust the authorities will see this case through to its rightful conclusion.”

Detectives from the Homicide Directorate, Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and Operations Unit are continuing investigations to establish whether additional accomplices were involved. The DCI has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all individuals responsible for the crime are held accountable. “We urge anyone with relevant information to come forward. No detail is too small in the pursuit of justice,” read part of the DCI statement.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Authorities are calling on the public to provide any leads that could assist in delivering justice for Richard Otieno.
