According to a notice issued by SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr Mercy Mwangangi on Sunday, October 25, the exercise will target healthcare facilities with outstanding claims worth KSh 10 million and above.
A total of 451 healthcare facilities have been identified for the verification exercise.
The affected facilities include Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 healthcare providers with pending claims that have yet to be verified and cleared for payment.
SHA has directed the affected facilities to check the visitation schedule published on its official website, www.sha.go.ke, to confirm when they are expected to participate in the exercise.
The facilities are also required to prepare their claims records, invoices, evidence of services rendered and other supporting documents to facilitate the verification process.
A specialised audit committee will scrutinise the submitted documents to establish the validity of the claims before the next steps are taken.
The exercise comes as SHA continues to address outstanding financial obligations inherited from NHIF following the transition to the new health insurance system.
NHIF was wound up on October 1, 2024, leaving behind legacy debts estimated at KSh 33 billion, which SHA inherited.
While claims amounting to KSh 10 million and below have reportedly been addressed through previous payment arrangements, high-value claims remain subject to verification.
Under the earlier settlement exercise, 3,527 healthcare facilities reportedly benefited from payments made in four batches, with approximately KSh 4 billion committed towards settling the lower-value claims.
The resumption of verification is expected to provide a pathway towards resolving outstanding claims owed to the affected facilities.
Healthcare providers have faced financial pressure over delayed reimbursements, with some facilities reporting difficulties meeting operational costs, purchasing medicines and sustaining service delivery.
For clarification, affected facilities can contact SHA's Benefits and Claims Department through directorbenefitsandclaims@sha.go.ke.
The outcome of the verification exercise will be important for healthcare facilities awaiting payment of their outstanding NHIF claims.
