The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has finally arrested a police officer linked to the cold-blooded murder of prominent Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.

In a statement issued today Thursday September 24, 2026, DCI boss Mohamed Amin confirmed the arrest of Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot as the suspected gunman.

Cheruiyot was arrested after a year-long intensive investigation into the murder that shocked the legal fraternity.

According to DCI, the officer shot Mbobu dead on September 9, 2025 along Magadi Road while he was driving home to Karen from work.

Detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident. Ballistic examination confirmed the firearm was used in the shooting.

"Ballistic examination has since confirmed that the firearm was indeed used in the shooting that claimed the life of Lawyer Mbobu," DCI said in its statement.

DCI described this as a major forensic breakthrough that strengthens evidence against suspects.

But the investigation has revealed a deeper conspiracy. DCI has also linked the murder to the July 29, 2026 murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso in Upper Hill.

Police say Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, allegedly coordinated both killings in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is already in custody.

Mbithe is suspected of killing Dr. Victoria Mutiso. Investigations point to a property dispute involving Professor David Ndetei. Mbithe was previously married to Prof Ndetei before he married Mutiso. Lawyer Mbobu had represented Ndetei during the divorce.

In a new twist today, DCI also arrested a boda boda rider Nicholas Lemiso Naula who allegedly ferried Constable Cheruiyot to and from the murder scene in CBD.

The Law Society of Kenya had demanded justice for Mbobu who was shot by two men on a motorcycle in what DCI called a targeted attack.

Constable Cheruiyot remains in custody pending arraignment as DCI says investigations remain active to establish motive, planning and execution.
