Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has handed over two vehicles intended to support women traders in Bungoma County, adding a new economic empowerment initiative to his public agenda as he seeks to become the county's next governor.

Barasa announced on Friday evening, October 23, 2026, that he had handed over a brand-new 14-seater Nissan Hiace for transporting Mama Mboga traders and an Isuzu FVR lorry designated to ferry their market produce.

The announcement comes as the legislator positions himself to succeed Governor Kenneth Lusaka, who is serving his second term, in the 2027 General Election.

“This evening, we have officially handed over a brand-new 14-seater Nissan Hiace dedicated to the safe transportation of our Bungoma Mama Mboga and an Isuzu FVR lorry designated for ferrying their market produce,” Barasa said.

The vehicles are intended to address transport challenges faced by small-scale traders, particularly women who need to travel to markets and move produce between trading centres.

Barasa said his objective was to help traders expand their businesses rather than merely support their day-to-day survival.

“Our vision transcends subsistence; it is about dismantling barriers to enterprise, alleviating the cost of trade, broadening market access and cultivating financially resilient businesses,” he stated.

He added that supporting women in business could have wider benefits for households and the county's economy.

“When our women traders flourish, household prosperity deepens, livelihoods are strengthened and Bungoma’s economic potential is translated into tangible, shared prosperity,” Barasa said.

However, the MP did not disclose how the vehicles would be allocated, whether traders would pay for the transport services or how their fuel and maintenance costs would be covered.

Those details will be important in determining the practical benefits of the initiative for Bungoma's small-scale traders.

Didmus Barasa's 2027 Bungoma Governor Bid

Barasa is seeking the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, setting up a political contest over the county's leadership and development priorities.

Lusaka, who is serving his second term as governor, will reach the end of his current tenure after the 2027 election cycle, opening the way for a new administration.

Barasa has used his development record in Kimilili and proposals for economic empowerment, education, healthcare and infrastructure to build his public profile beyond the constituency.

His latest announcement targets women traders, a group whose businesses can be affected by transportation costs, limited access to markets and the expenses involved in moving goods.

The donation also gives the MP an opportunity to present his approach to economic development as he makes his case to voters across Bungoma County.

Whether the initiative produces lasting benefits will depend on how the transport service is organised, how many traders can access it and whether it reduces the cost of doing business.

Education Projects in Kimilili

Education infrastructure has featured prominently in Barasa's account of his development record as Kimilili MP.

In September 2026, the Kenya News Agency reported that Barasa had highlighted improvements to school infrastructure, including modern classrooms with tiled floors and cabro-paved areas.

“When I took over, I pledged to modernise all our schools and today all the schools have modern tiled classrooms and cabros. It's only two that are remaining and will be done by December,” Barasa said, according to the agency.

The statement presented school infrastructure as one of the areas in which the MP believes his constituency has made progress.

The claim about the number of schools completed should be assessed against individual school projects and their implementation status. A countywide assessment would also be necessary before drawing conclusions about the overall condition of schools across Bungoma.

For voters, the key questions include the quality of the completed facilities, the number of learners benefiting and whether the improvements have addressed existing infrastructure gaps.

Kimilili Huduma Centre and Access to Government Services

Access to public services is another area associated with development efforts in Kimilili.

The Huduma Centre serves as a point through which residents can access government services without necessarily travelling to other towns for every administrative need.

The availability of such services can help reduce travel time and associated expenses for residents seeking documentation and other government assistance.

However, claims about the centre's specific contribution to Barasa's development record should be supported by official project records establishing his role, the project's funding arrangements and its operational history.

The distinction matters as voters compare completed projects with broader political claims during the run-up to the 2027 election.

Healthcare Facilities and Medical Services

Healthcare is also part of the development agenda Barasa has highlighted in connection with Kimilili and his gubernatorial ambitions.

Reports about his constituency record have referenced local health infrastructure, including Kibingei Dispensary and maternity services at health facilities.

At the county level, Barasa has outlined proposals aimed at improving public healthcare, including better medical equipment, stronger primary healthcare services and free ambulance transfers between county hospitals.

These are proposals for a possible future county administration and should not be confused with policies already implemented by the Bungoma County Government.

If elected governor, Barasa would be expected to explain how such commitments would be financed, how existing facilities would be supported and how residents in remote areas would benefit.

Technical Training and Opportunities for Young People

Technical and vocational education has also featured in discussions surrounding development in the wider Kimilili area.

In April 2026, The Star reported on efforts by Barasa to push for Matili Technical Training Institute to be upgraded to national polytechnic status.

The proposed upgrade is intended to strengthen technical education and increase opportunities for young people to acquire practical skills.

The initiative forms part of the broader conversation about training, employment and access to higher-level technical education in the region.

Its progress and implementation status should be verified through the institution and relevant education authorities before it is presented as a completed achievement of the MP.

For Barasa, vocational education is also relevant to his wider development agenda because access to practical skills can help young people pursue employment or establish businesses.

Women and Youth Economic Empowerment

Barasa's latest donation places women's economic empowerment at the centre of his public messaging.

The Nissan Hiace is intended to transport traders, while the Isuzu FVR lorry is designated for their market produce.

If implemented through a reliable and affordable service, the arrangement could help traders move goods more efficiently and reach markets with fewer transport difficulties.

However, the announcement did not specify the number of women expected to benefit, the locations the vehicles would serve or the arrangements for booking and paying for transport.

These details will help determine whether the initiative reaches traders across Bungoma or serves a smaller group of beneficiaries.

Barasa has also promoted proposals for a women and youth enterprise fund as part of his gubernatorial agenda. Such a programme would require a clear funding framework, transparent beneficiary selection and accountability mechanisms if adopted by a future county administration.

What Bungoma Voters Will Want to Know

As the 2027 gubernatorial contest approaches, Barasa's development record and policy proposals are likely to come under closer scrutiny.

The immediate questions surrounding the vehicle donation concern who will manage the vehicles, how traders will access the service and whether the arrangement will reduce transportation costs.

His wider political agenda raises other questions: how he would finance proposed healthcare improvements, what resources would be allocated to schools and vocational training, and how economic empowerment programmes would reach residents across the county's nine sub-counties.

The answers will help voters distinguish between projects already delivered, initiatives still under implementation and campaign pledges awaiting funding and execution.

For now, Barasa's announcement marks a new transport initiative aimed at Bungoma's Mama Mboga traders, while adding to the development agenda he is presenting as he pursues the county's top seat.
