NAIROBI, Kenya – Former ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has congratulated Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Kamau following his victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, while alleging that the contest was marred by bribery, violence, intimidation and the use of state machinery.

The outspoken politician made the remarks in a statement shared on his social media platforms shortly after the by-election results were announced, praising the people of Ol Kalou for what he described as their resilience in the face of intense political pressure.

"Hats off to the people of Ol Kalou. Everything was thrown at you; bribery, violence, intimidation, state power, but you stood firm," Sifuna wrote.

He further congratulated the winning candidate and the entire DCP team, describing the outcome as a decisive victory for the party.

"Congratulations to Sammy Kamau and the entire DCP team for that resounding victory."

Sifuna Raises Concerns Over Conduct of the Election

Sifuna claimed that despite alleged attempts to influence the outcome through intimidation and misuse of state resources, voters remained determined and exercised their democratic right.

However, he did not provide evidence to support the allegations contained in his statement. At the time of publication, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies and other relevant authorities had not publicly responded to the claims.

DCP Celebrates a Major Political Milestone

Sammy Kamau's victory marks another significant moment for the Democratic Citizens Party as it continues to strengthen its political presence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Ol Kalou by-election attracted considerable national attention, with political leaders from across the divide closely monitoring the contest. Analysts viewed the race as an important indicator of shifting political dynamics and voter sentiment in the constituency.

Although the official outcome has been celebrated by DCP supporters, the by-election has also generated debate over the conduct of the campaigns, following claims and counterclaims made by political leaders during and after the voting process.

Political Significance of the Ol Kalou By-Election

Beyond determining the constituency's next Member of Parliament, the Ol Kalou by-election was widely seen as a test of party mobilisation, grassroots support and campaign strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers say the result is likely to influence how parties organise future campaigns and shape emerging political alliances as competition intensifies across the country.

For DCP, the victory provides momentum and reinforces the party's ambitions to expand its representation in elective positions. For other political formations, the outcome offers valuable lessons on voter engagement and campaign strategy.

Reactions Expected

Sifuna's statement is expected to spark further political debate, particularly over his allegations regarding the conduct of the election. Attention is now likely to turn to whether the electoral commission, security agencies or other stakeholders will respond to the claims.

Meanwhile, DCP supporters continue to celebrate Sammy Kamau's victory, describing it as a triumph for the electorate and a sign of the party's growing influence in Kenya's evolving political landscape.

As the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election, political analysts expect the Ol Kalou by-election to remain a key reference point in discussions about voter behaviour, campaign conduct and the changing balance of political power.
