NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug. 5 — The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has officially taken over investigations into the death of Erick Otieno at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Nairobi.
The announcement marks a significant development in a case that has attracted widespread public attention, with Kenyans demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding Otieno's death and calling for a transparent investigation.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the National Police Service said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately commenced investigations after receiving reports of Otieno's death before transferring the matter to IPOA, the independent agency mandated to investigate deaths and serious incidents involving police officers.
"Upon receiving the report of his passing, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations promptly initiated inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The investigations have now been taken over by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority," the police said.
IPOA Takes Charge of Independent Investigation
The National Police Service said it would fully support IPOA throughout the investigation, emphasizing that the process would be conducted independently and without interference.
"The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to cooperating with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority in conducting a thorough, impartial and timely investigation," the statement read.
The handover places the responsibility of determining the circumstances leading to Otieno's death on IPOA, whose findings could inform any legal or disciplinary action if wrongdoing is established.

According to the police, Erick Otieno died at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, prompting an immediate investigation by DCI detectives.
