Eugene Wamalwa Claims Garissa Rally Was Sabotaged, Says Youth Were Used to Disrupt Opposition Event

Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has claimed that attempts were made to disrupt an opposition rally in Garissa, arguing that intimidation will not stop Kenyans from demanding political change.

Wamalwa said the events in Garissa had demonstrated what he described as growing public dissatisfaction with the current political establishment.

“Garissa has rendered its verdict. Intimidation cannot extinguish a people’s yearning for change,” Wamalwa said.

According to the former Cabinet Secretary, efforts to interfere with the rally included what he termed the “cynical exploitation of young people as instruments of disruption.”

“Attempts to sabotage our rally, including the cynical exploitation of young people as instruments of disruption, did not silence the people,” he said.

Wamalwa further argued that the alleged disruption had instead exposed what he described as the government’s inability to confront its political opponents based on its record in office.

“They only exposed the desperation of a regime increasingly unable to confront the electorate on the strength of its record,” he said.

The former Defence CS also used the occasion to address the role of young people in Kenya’s political and economic future.

“Our youth are not political ammunition,” Wamalwa said.

He described young Kenyans as “Kenya’s greatest reservoir of talent, enterprise and possibility,” while accusing the government of failing to provide sufficient opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and skills development.

“A government that summons young people to throw stones when it should be opening doors to employment, enterprise, skills and opportunity has fundamentally betrayed the generation entrusted with the country’s future,” he said.

Wamalwa said the political message emerging from Garissa was broader than the events surrounding the rally, arguing that Kenyans were experiencing economic difficulties and declining opportunities.

“From Garissa came a resounding indictment of the status quo,” he said.

According to Wamalwa, households are facing increasing financial pressure while opportunities for young people are becoming harder to find.

“Kenyans are hurting, households are under immense pressure, opportunities are shrinking and the promise of a better Kenya is being steadily eroded,” he said.

The former Cabinet Secretary said the opposition’s proposed alternative government would seek to overhaul what he described as a failed political and economic system.

“We present a clear roadmap to dismantle the architecture of failure, restore institutional credibility, revive economic opportunity, empower our youth and rebuild the foundations of a functional, dignified and prosperous republic,” Wamalwa said.

He concluded by declaring that the United alternative government was prepared to offer Kenyans a different political direction.

“The United alternative government is ready to lead the country towards THE KENYA WE WANT,” he said.
