Gachagua said the decision by what he described as Ruto’s opponents to seek a change of government had already been made, but the opposition still needed to agree on one candidate who would face the President at the ballot.
“The decision to vote you out is settled, and only one matter is outstanding to complete the picture: the identification of a single presidential candidate to take you home,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President said discussions were already underway and suggested that Kenyans would soon know who the opposition candidate would be.
“I want to assure you that this is a piece of work in progress, and very soon we shall let you know the man or woman to whom you shall hand over,” he said.
Gachagua’s remarks come as opposition-aligned leaders continue to debate political cooperation and the possibility of rallying behind one presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
Gachagua dismisses Uhuru focus
Gachagua also took issue with Ruto’s references to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that the former Head of State should not be portrayed as Ruto’s main political opponent.
“Mr. William Ruto, I have heard you brag and fallaciously argue that Rtd. President Uhuru Kenyatta did not defeat you when he was President and that he can't defeat you now that he is retired,” Gachagua said.
“Put logically, you were elected President despite President Uhuru Kenyatta having been against you.”
Gachagua argued that Uhuru’s failure to stop Ruto’s election in 2022 did not mean he had failed to make a political case against him.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta did not sufficiently convince me and a majority of Kenyans that you were incapable of leading the country, that you were viciously corrupt, and that you would completely ruin our country in less than three years,” he said.
“Today, you have proven to me and the whole country that President Uhuru was right.”
He further argued that Uhuru had no reason to remain at the centre of the 2027 contest.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta is not your opponent in this election,” Gachagua said.
“You are just trying a bad deflection. Poor tactic Mr. Ruto, but we know you very well.”
‘Your opponents are the people of Kenya’
Gachagua said Ruto’s real political challenge would come from ordinary Kenyans, listing several groups he claimed were dissatisfied with the government.
“Your opponents are the people of Kenya: the payslip holders whose payslips you have raided, the GenZs whom you have abducted and killed, the Christians whose churches you have defiled, the business people whom you have run out of business,” he said.
He also cited patients, parents and students among those he claimed were facing difficulties under the current administration.
“55 million Kenyans are your opponents,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua’s remarks included several allegations against the government that were presented as his political claims.
Gachagua points to Olkalou
The DCP leader also cited the recent political contest in Olkalou as an indication of what he believes could happen during the 2027 General Election.
“Every morning and evening, I am informed that what you witnessed in Olkalou and your dirty money make you quiver,” he said.
“You have seen nothing yet, Mr. Ruto. Olkalou was just a dress rehearsal for the forthcoming General Election.”
Gachagua also referred to political events in Embu and Nembure, alleging that money was being used to influence political support.
“Kenyans will take your money and vote you out,” he said.
“Have you forgotten the Embu-Nembure weekend ordeal of your fake deputy? Prepare enough bribes for everyone, or no one!”
Gachagua warns Ruto over 2027
The former Deputy President also accused Ruto of attempting to mobilise political support through financial incentives, including during meetings in Nyanza.
“As you spend money in Nyanza to bribe people to attend your meetings, please appoint a team to start preparing your handover notes,” he said.
Gachagua concluded his message with a warning about Ruto’s political future.
“Your fate is sealed; Italians would kindly tell you, ‘Il tuo destino è segnato!’” he said.
“Finito!”
Opposition unity remains key question
Gachagua’s statement places the question of opposition unity at the centre of the emerging 2027 presidential contest.
While he did not name the candidate who could face Ruto, he said the process of identifying a single challenger was ongoing and that an announcement would be made soon.
The remarks add another layer to the political realignment taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition figures facing the question of whether they can agree on one presidential candidate and campaign platform.
For now, Gachagua says that decision remains the outstanding piece of the political puzzle.
