Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has renewed his commitment to the political journey he shared with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, pledging to continue their push for a more equitable Kenya.

In a tribute marking one year since Raila’s death, Kalonzo described the former Prime Minister as more than a political ally, saying their relationship was built on friendship, brotherhood and a shared vision for the country.

“For more than 15 years, we were more than allies and brothers. We were Kenyans bound by one dream: a better, more equitable Kenya,” Kalonzo said.

The opposition leader made the remarks as leaders and supporters gathered in Bondo to honour Raila’s memory during the first anniversary of his death.

Addressing his late friend directly, Kalonzo said their shared political vision remained alive despite Raila’s absence.

“My brother, my friend, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a year has passed since you left us, but that dream lives on and the journey we began together continues,” he stated.

Kalonzo Reaffirms Commitment to ‘Canaan’

Kalonzo used the anniversary to reaffirm his commitment to what he described as the journey to Canaan, a political aspiration associated with the struggle for a better Kenya.

“Today, as we honour your memory in Bondo, I renew my commitment to see us through to the Canaan we set out for together,” he said.

He described Canaan as the country’s “third liberation”, which he also referred to as Ukombozi.

According to Kalonzo, the vision involves addressing economic hardships, protecting citizens’ rights and restoring democratic principles.

“That Canaan is the third liberation, the Ukombozi. It is the journey to Komboa Kenya from punitive taxation, the high cost of living, injustice and oppression,” he said.

His remarks placed taxation and the cost of living at the centre of his message, alongside concerns over governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Kalonzo Calls for Constitutionalism and Justice

The Wiper leader said the journey he shared with Raila was also about defending the Constitution, strengthening the rule of law and restoring democratic principles.

He called for a Kenya where citizens can live with dignity, enjoy peace and have equal opportunities to succeed.

“And at its end is a nation where every Kenyan can afford to live in dignity, enjoy peace and have an equal opportunity to succeed,” Kalonzo said.

The statement reinforces the themes of economic relief, justice and democratic accountability that he associates with the political journey he shared with Raila.

‘We Shall Finish This Journey’

Concluding his tribute, Kalonzo promised to continue pursuing their shared vision in honour of the late opposition leader.

“My brother and friend, we shall finish this journey, in your memory and in your honour,” he said.

He ended his message with a final tribute to Raila, who remained a central figure in Kenya’s opposition politics for decades.

“Rest in eternal peace, Baba.”

Kalonzo’s message comes as Raila’s first death anniversary prompts renewed reflection on his political legacy and the future of the causes he championed, including constitutional reform, democratic governance and economic justice.
