The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has broken its silence after an aircraft accident involving a Eurocopter EC130 B4, registration 5Y-GYM, at Lolokwe Mountain in Samburu County.


The accident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at approximately 9:13 a.m. local time while the aircraft was operating a flight from Loisaba to Ewasonyiro.

In a statement issued in Nairobi, KCAA confirmed the accident and said it was coordinating with relevant agencies and stakeholders in response to the incident.

“The aircraft was conducting a flight from Loisaba to Ewasonyiro when the accident occurred at approximately 0913 hrs local time,” KCAA said.

The aviation authority said the Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) under the Ministry of Roads and Transport was leading investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The cause of the accident has not been established, with investigators expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the flight and determine what led to the incident.

KCAA said it was working with relevant agencies and stakeholders as authorities responded to the accident at Lolokwe Mountain.

“KCAA is coordinating with the relevant agencies and stakeholders in response to the accident,” the authority said.

The aviation authority did not provide further details on the number of people aboard the aircraft or the extent of casualties in its initial statement.

However, KCAA confirmed that there were victims and expressed condolences to their families following the tragedy.

“The Authority extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims following this tragic incident,” KCAA said.

The AAID investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident, with authorities expected to provide additional information as the investigation and response efforts continue.
