Mudavadi Reveals What Kenya Wants From Its Australia Partnership

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 16, 2026 — Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has revealed what Kenya wants from its partnership with Australia, with the government seeking to expand trade, investment, skills and employment opportunities for Kenyans.

Mudavadi spoke after hosting Australian Ambassador to Kenya Andrew Barnes alongside representatives of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), who are in Kenya on a working visit.

“From education and jobs to trade and investment, Kenya’s partnership with Australia continues to open doors for our people,” Mudavadi said.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary said Australia is already a leading destination for Kenyans pursuing education and employment opportunities, with more than 20,000 Kenyans living in the country.

He said Kenya wants to build on the existing people-to-people ties by expanding opportunities in skills development, business and investment.

“Our ambition is to build on these strong people-to-people ties by expanding opportunities for skills, business and investment,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi calls for stronger Kenya Australia trade

Mudavadi said Kenya wants bilateral trade with Australia to grow while becoming more balanced, diversified and focused on value addition.

He said the approach should ensure that the benefits of stronger economic relations reach Kenyan farmers, businesses, entrepreneurs and young people.

“We want to see Kenya–Australia trade grow further, becoming more balanced, diversified and focused on value addition so that our farmers, businesses, entrepreneurs and young people benefit directly,” he said.

The remarks place trade and investment at the centre of Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its economic relationship with Australia, alongside existing cooperation in education and employment.

Mudavadi said the next phase of the partnership should focus on turning the strong relationship between the two countries into practical opportunities for their people.

“The next chapter must be about turning strong relations into even stronger opportunities,” he said.

The engagement with Ambassador Barnes and Austrade representatives comes as Kenya seeks to strengthen its economic partnerships and expand opportunities in trade, investment, skills and employment.

Mudavadi said Kenya’s focus is now on ensuring that the existing relationship with Australia translates into stronger economic opportunities for Kenyans.
