Kondiwa made the call on Tuesday when he met members of the Motorcycle Assemblers Association of Kenya (MAAK), including representatives from CFAO, Mogo Auto Ltd, Watu Credit, Bajaj Auto, Kibo Africa, Abson Motors, Makindu Motors and Car and General, among others.
The meeting brought together NTSA and key players in the motorcycle industry to deliberate on “issues affecting the motorcycle sector” and explore ways of improving engagement between the Authority and industry stakeholders.
A key focus of the discussions was road safety, particularly measures aimed at protecting motorcycle riders and pillion passengers.
In his remarks, Kondiwa highlighted the “urgent need for collaborative approaches to enhance safety and compliance” within the sector.
The NTSA Director General emphasized that motorcycle assemblers have an important role to play in supporting road safety awareness programmes targeting riders and other road users.
He called for greater industry support for “road safety awareness programmes” as part of efforts to promote safer motorcycle use and strengthen compliance.
Kondiwa also emphasized the role of motorcycle assemblers in ensuring riders and pillion passengers have access to standard helmets.
According to NTSA, the use of standard helmets is among the measures that have the potential to “reduce fatalities and injuries among riders and pillion passengers.”
The call comes as the Authority continues to engage stakeholders in the motorcycle industry on measures aimed at improving safety while enhancing service delivery.
Beyond road safety, the meeting also addressed NTSA’s efforts to “enhance service delivery” and “improve the ease of doing business” for players in the motorcycle sector.
The engagement provided an opportunity for motorcycle assemblers and other industry stakeholders to raise issues affecting their operations while discussing areas where greater cooperation with NTSA could improve the sector.
Kondiwa’s emphasis on collaboration puts industry players at the centre of efforts to promote road safety alongside the regulator and motorcycle users.
Motorcycle assemblers, financiers, dealers and other businesses play an important role in Kenya’s motorcycle ecosystem, making their involvement in safety awareness and compliance initiatives significant.
The NTSA DG reiterated the need for stakeholders to work together to address safety concerns and improve compliance across the sector.
The Authority said such engagements form part of its commitment to better service delivery and improved road safety.
