Oburu said he and Mama Judy welcomed Makoloo to their UK residence for discussions on Kenya’s relationship with its diaspora, as well as ways of using diaspora investments and skills to support development back home.
“This morning, Mama Judy, and I were pleased to welcome Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK, HE Maurice Makoloo, for a courtesy call at our residence in UK,” Oburu said.
“We had a productive discussion on strengthening ties, supporting our vibrant Kenyan diaspora, and leveraging their investments and skills to drive development back home,” he added.
Why Oburu Oginga travelled to the UK
Oburu travelled to the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up after receiving advice from his doctors and ODM party leadership.
On September 10, 2026, Oburu confirmed that he was in the UK to undergo what he described as a “thorough, routine medical checkup.”
He said the visit was intended to provide a comprehensive evaluation of his health while also giving him time to rest and recuperate.
The UK trip followed a brief visit to Nairobi Hospital on September 1, which generated public interest in the ODM leader’s health.
Oburu later clarified that the hospital visit was for a general check-up.
“I had only briefly visited the hospital for a general check-up with my doctors and have since returned home,” he said.
“Being sick is a normal human experience and should not alarm anyone. The day I am truly sick, I will inform you all, for I am a very transparent person,” Oburu added.
ODM communications officials subsequently said the party leader was doing well.
Oburu has not publicly disclosed a specific diagnosis or details of specialised treatment in the UK. His own explanation remains that he travelled for a routine medical check-up, health evaluation and rest.

During his meeting with Makoloo, Oburu highlighted the importance of Kenya’s diaspora in national development.
“A strong diaspora is a vital pillar of our nation's prosperity,” the ODM leader said.
The discussions centred on strengthening ties with Kenyans living in the UK and exploring ways to harness their investments, expertise and skills for development in Kenya.
Oburu thanked Makoloo for the visit and expressed his desire for continued collaboration.
“I thank Ambassador Makoloo for his visit and look forward to our continued collaboration,” he said.
The meeting comes as Oburu continues his stay in the UK following his decision to seek medical assessment abroad.
The ODM leader has also maintained communication on party affairs during his absence, with other senior officials overseeing the party’s operations.
