The operation was conducted on Monday, September 7, 2026, by officers attached to Kahawa West Police Station in Kasarani Sub-County, as police targeted an alleged illegal alcohol brewing and distribution network.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers confiscated and destroyed 3,200 litres of kangara during the raid.
“During the raid, officers confiscated and destroyed 3,200 litres of kangara,” the National Police Service said.
Police also seized other alcoholic brews, including 45 litres of chang'aa and 10 litres of muratina.
The officers further recovered “various brewing apparatus and distillation equipment,” according to the NPS, effectively disrupting the alleged brewing operation in Soweto, Kahawa West.
One suspect arrested in Kahawa West raid
The police operation also resulted in the arrest of one suspect, who was taken into custody following the raid.
The suspect is currently being held by police as officers process the case before she is arraigned in court.
“She is currently being held in custody, pending processing and arraignment in court,” the National Police Service said.
Police have not disclosed the suspect's identity or provided further details about the charges she is expected to face.
Police intensify crackdown on illicit alcohol
The Kahawa West operation comes amid continued police efforts to disrupt the manufacture and distribution of illicit alcoholic drinks and narcotic substances.
The National Police Service said it remains committed to conducting targeted operations against illegal brewing activities across the country.
The service reiterated its commitment to “continuing relentlessly with such targeted crackdowns across the country to eradicate narcotic drugs and illicit brews from the community.”
The police operation in Soweto, Kahawa West, resulted in the destruction of thousands of litres of suspected illicit alcohol as well as equipment allegedly used in its production.
Police urge public to report illegal activities
The National Police Service has also appealed to members of the public to provide information about suspected illegal activities in their neighbourhoods.
Residents can report such activities at their nearest police station or through the national emergency numbers 999 and 911.
The public can also share information with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000, according to the police.
The NPS said information from the public remains important in helping law enforcement agencies identify and disrupt illegal activities within communities.
The Kahawa West crackdown demonstrates the continued police focus on illicit alcohol production in Nairobi, with authorities targeting both the brewing facilities and the networks involved in the distribution of unauthorised alcoholic drinks.
