President William Ruto has announced a major partnership between Kenya, Italy and GKSD Group that will see 15 new hospitals constructed across 15 counties.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, Ruto said the agreement will deliver 13 Level 5 county referral hospitals and two Level 6 national teaching and referral hospitals.
“Under this partnership, we will build 13 Level 5 county referral hospitals and 2 Level 6 national teaching and referral hospitals in 15 counties,” Ruto said.
The President said the investment is aimed at addressing Kenya’s shortage of hospital beds and expanding access to specialised healthcare services.
“Kenya currently has 12 hospital beds per 10,000 people against the World Health Organisation benchmark of 25,” he said.
According to Ruto, the new facilities will substantially increase Kenya’s hospital capacity while bringing specialised medical services closer to communities.
“These new facilities will significantly expand our hospital capacity, bring specialised medical services closer to communities, and accelerate our journey towards Universal Health Coverage,” the President said.
The partnership is being implemented under Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, an initiative focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between Italy and African countries.
Ruto said the hospital projects would have a transformative impact on Kenya’s healthcare system and the lives of millions of citizens.
“These projects, being implemented under Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, will radically transform the lives of our people,” he said.
The announcement comes as the government continues to pursue its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, with increased healthcare infrastructure expected to complement ongoing reforms in health financing and service delivery.
The 15 facilities are expected to strengthen referral systems by providing higher-level care within counties while reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to access specialised treatment.
The partnership marks one of the latest major foreign-backed investments in Kenya’s healthcare infrastructure and could significantly reshape access to specialised medical services across the country.
