A recent meeting involving Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Governor James Orengo at a Nairobi hotel has injected fresh momentum into the opposition succession debate.
Photos from the meeting circulated widely online, prompting speculation among Kenyans and political observers about what the three leaders discussed.
While the details of the meeting have not been made public, the gathering has fueled speculation that opposition leaders could be exploring ways of building consensus ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
The meeting has also renewed attention on Sifuna’s growing profile as a potential presidential contender and whether he could eventually emerge as a compromise candidate capable of bringing different opposition factions together.
Orengo, who has already expressed interest in leading the opposition into the 2027 presidential race, remains an important figure in the discussions.
The question now is whether the opposition can find common ground and rally behind one candidate before the election campaign enters its decisive phase.
Gachagua Signals Willingness to Work With Sifuna
The Sifuna debate has gained further attention following remarks by former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua while he was in the United States.
Gachagua indicated that he would be willing to work with Sifuna if Kenyans ultimately determined that the Nairobi Senator was the most suitable candidate to challenge President Ruto in 2027.
He also suggested that he could even consider serving as Sifuna’s deputy if such an arrangement was supported by Kenyans and formed part of a broader strategy to defeat Ruto.
The remarks have added another layer to the evolving opposition debate.
Gachagua has been positioning himself as a key figure in efforts to build a political alternative ahead of the 2027 election, and his willingness to work with Sifuna could become significant if opposition parties eventually begin formal negotiations over a joint presidential ticket.
Caleb Amisi Throws Weight Behind Sifuna
Sifuna has also received backing from other opposition leaders, including Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, further intensifying the debate over his potential role in the 2027 presidential race.
In his remarks, Amisi said:
“They can block roads, but they cannot block an idea whose time has come.”
Amisi also insisted that the team proceeded with its planned rally after attending a church service, despite disruptions.
“Mabadiliko ni sasa! And Kenya needs a renaissance.”
The remarks have added to growing speculation that Sifuna could become one of the key figures in the opposition’s efforts to mount a serious challenge against Ruto.
Can Edwin Sifuna Unseat William Ruto in 2027?
As President William Ruto intensifies his efforts to secure a second term, the opposition faces a crucial political test: whether it can agree on one presidential candidate capable of consolidating its support.
A united opposition could potentially avoid splitting votes among multiple candidates and create a clearer alternative to Ruto.
However, achieving such unity will not be easy.
