Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's plans to unveil a new political party ahead of the 2027 General Election have encountered a fresh setback after the proposed Ukombozi People's Party name was rejected by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

The development comes as leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement prepare to announce the political vehicle that Sifuna is expected to use in the 2027 elections.

According to Capital FM's report on Monday, September 21, 2026, the Registrar of Political Parties blocked the proposed Ukombozi name after determining that it resembled The Ukombozi Alliance, whose name had already been reserved.

The Star also reported on September 21 that the Registrar had rejected proposed changes to the United Democratic Party, including the proposed adoption of the name Ukombozi People's Party.

The newspaper reported that the Registrar's decision was contained in a letter dated September 8, 2026, which stated that the proposed name had not been approved or authorised for use by the United Democratic Party.

The Registrar cited the similarity between Ukombozi People's Party and The Ukombozi Alliance, which had been reserved by another applicant on July 20, 2026.

The development has complicated plans by Sifuna's allies, who had previously indicated that the Nairobi senator would unveil his political vehicle in early October.

The Star reported earlier on Monday that Sifuna was expected to unveil his party in Nairobi on October 1, although the report noted that the political vehicle was still being discussed within the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Tuko.co.ke separately reported on September 21 that Sifuna's political team had several party options as it looked for an electoral vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The report said an insider within the Linda Mwananchi movement indicated that the team had about two parties that could receive full registration by the end of September.

The uncertainty follows months of disagreements within Linda Mwananchi over the political party that should be used by the movement in the next election.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has already identified The Mwananchi Party as the vehicle he intends to use for his Nairobi gubernatorial ambitions, while continuing to support Sifuna's presidential ambitions.

Tuko.co.ke reported on September 19 that Babu had said Sifuna would lead the Ukombozi People's Party while he would lead The Mwananchi Party, with the two parties potentially working together under the Linda Mwananchi umbrella.

The proposed Ukombozi name has also become more complicated because Azimio la Umoja leaders announced on September 21 that their coalition had agreed to rebrand as The Ukombozi Alliance.

The Star reported that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebranding on Monday, saying the coalition had unanimously agreed to adopt the new name.

Despite the naming dispute, Sifuna's political plans remain active, with his allies continuing to prepare for the launch of a new party or political vehicle.

Daily Nation reported on September 21 that Sifuna was expected to unveil a new party in October as he prepares for the 2027 General Election.

For now, however, the name Ukombozi People's Party remains unresolved following the Registrar's decision, meaning Sifuna's team may have to settle on another political vehicle or pursue a different legal arrangement.

The final name, party structure and launch details are expected to become clearer as the Linda Mwananchi team continues its preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
