Three residents of Birirkut/Chebilat Village in Kapyego Location, Marakwet East, have voluntarily surrendered an illegal AK 47 rifle and 12 rounds of ammunition to security agencies.

The firearm was handed over at Kapyego Police Station on September 11, 2026, as security agencies continue with peace and disarmament efforts aimed at removing illicit firearms from civilian hands in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The National Police Service commended the residents for cooperating with authorities, describing the voluntary surrender as an important boost to ongoing community led security initiatives.

“The National Police Service commends the residents of Marakwet East Sub County for their continued cooperation in the ongoing peace and disarmament initiatives in the region,” police said.

According to the police, the three residents safely surrendered the AK 47 assault rifle together with a magazine containing 12 rounds of ammunition.

“The assault weapon, an AK 47, together with a magazine containing twelve rounds of ammunition, was safely handed over by three patriotic citizens from Birirkut/Chebilat Village in Kapyego Location,” the National Police Service stated.

Community Policing Drives Firearm Surrenders

The surrender comes as authorities encourage individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms to hand them over voluntarily through the community led amnesty framework.

Police said the initiative is designed to encourage the surrender of illegal firearms while strengthening cooperation between security agencies and local communities.

“This latest handover reflects the growing success of community policing and the community led amnesty framework,” the National Police Service said.

The latest development also highlights the role of local residents in supporting efforts to improve security in areas affected by the presence of illicit weapons.

371 Rifles Recorded Across Elgeyo Marakwet

The surrender of the AK 47 rifle adds to the number of illicit weapons and ordnance that security agencies say have been recovered from civilian hands across Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The National Police Service said the cumulative total now stands at 371 rifles, 2,458 rounds of ammunition and one fragmentation rifle grenade.

“With this surrender, the cumulative total of illicit weapons and ordnance recovered from civilian hands across Elgeyo Marakwet County now stands at 371 rifles, 2,458 rounds of ammunition and one fragmentation rifle grenade,” police said.

Authorities have urged other individuals still holding illegal firearms to follow the example of the three Birirkut Village residents and surrender the weapons to the nearest police station.

“We urge other individuals who may still be in possession of illegal firearms to emulate the exemplary actions of the residents of Birirkut Village and surrender them to the nearest police station,” the National Police Service said.
