Kenyans have been left shocked after milk prices shot up to Sh85 per litre in many parts of the country.

This is the highest price ever recorded in recent years and many families say they can no longer afford milk for their children.

A spot check by Daily Nation in estates like Kasarani, Githurai, Zimmerman, Kayole, Buruburu and Embakasi shows a litre of fresh milk is now selling at between Sh75 and Sh85.

Before, the same litre was selling at Sh60.

Traders say there is no milk in the market. Farmers are also complaining that their cows are not producing enough milk because of the drought.

Ruto's Solution That Angered Kenyans

Speaking on Friday October 10 at Jamhuri Showground in Nairobi during the Agriculture Summit, President William Ruto told Kenyans to stop depending only on cow milk.

The President said Kenya should diversify and start drinking milk from camels, goats, sheep and even buffaloes.

"We need to diversify our source of milk, from camels, sheep, goats and even from buffaloes," Ruto said.

The crowd laughed when he mentioned buffaloes.

Ruto ordered the Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke to look for better camel breeds that can produce more milk. He said camel milk is popular and can help in arid areas.

Kenyans React

However, Kenyans online are not happy. Many have taken to X and Facebook to slam the President.

They say instead of telling them to drink camel milk, the government should lower the cost of animal feeds and help farmers.

"How can a common mwananchi in Kayole find buffalo milk? This is mockery," a Kenyan wrote.

Another one said, "From chicken to camel to buffalo. Hustlers are suffering."

With the cost of living already high, many families are now forced to take black tea without milk.

Do you agree with President Ruto? Would you drink camel or goat milk?
