In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the Embassy confirmed it will remain closed throughout today in observance of Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the United States.
Many Kenyans who had booked visa interviews for today were left stranded after arriving at the Gigiri offices only to find the gates closed.
"The U.S. Embassy Nairobi will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2026 in observance of Columbus Day. Regular services will resume on Tuesday, October 13," the Embassy said in a brief notice.
Columbus Day is a US federal holiday marked every second Monday of October to honor explorer Christopher Columbus. All US federal institutions including embassies worldwide close on this day.
What this means for Kenyans:
1. No visa interviews will be conducted today. All appointments scheduled for October 12 will be rescheduled automatically.
2. No passport collection today.
3. Emergency services for US citizens will however remain available through the emergency line.
The Embassy has advised Kenyans with appointments today to check their emails for rescheduled dates or contact the visa section via the official website.
Kenyans are advised not to travel to the Embassy today to avoid inconveniences.
Services are expected to resume normally tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13, from 7:30 AM.
