What was expected to be a peaceful political gathering at Nembure Grounds in Embu County on Saturday turned chaotic after thousands of residents reportedly turned up for an event attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.

The event, described as a Pasua Mulima gathering, attracted a large crowd, with reports indicating that many residents arrived at the venue hoping to participate in the meeting.

However, tensions reportedly escalated after a section of the crowd was denied entry into the grounds.

According to residents who spoke to The Daily Whistle, messages had been circulated ahead of the event inviting selected attendees. There were also rumours that those attending would receive KSh1,000, a claim that reportedly contributed to the unusually large turnout.

As the crowd grew, security officers restricted access to the venue, with some residents reportedly unable to gain entry because they did not have the required invitation messages.

The situation allegedly became tense as hundreds of people remained outside the venue.

Eyewitnesses said confrontations subsequently broke out between some members of the crowd and security officers, with reports of people being injured as the situation deteriorated.

Police later confirmed that one person had died, while several vehicles were reportedly burnt during the chaos.

There were also circulating claims that a young child had died during the incident. However, such claims should be treated cautiously unless independently confirmed by police, hospital officials or the child's family.

Kindiki condemns violence

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki condemned the disruption, saying the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) regretted the loss and damage arising from the incident.

Kindiki said the party condemned violence and called on law enforcement agencies to take action against those responsible.

“The Party condemns violence and demands that law enforcement agencies take punitive measures against all those responsible for perpetuating political violence,” Kindiki said.

He further said UDA officials in Embu had been tasked with establishing the extent of the losses and coordinating assistance to those affected by the incident.

The Deputy President's remarks came as questions mounted over how a political gathering attended by senior government leaders descended into violence.

Mbarire speaks after chaos

Governor Cecily Mbarire also condemned the violence, with reports indicating that she accused political actors of being behind the disruption.

Mbarire said the incident resulted in losses, including damage to vehicles and disruption of the meeting.

She also claimed that some delegates were attacked and that UDA merchandise was taken or destroyed during the chaos.

The Governor's allegations have, however, not established who organised the disruption, leaving questions over what triggered the confrontation and whether the incident was politically coordinated.

What caused the Nembure chaos?

The events at Nembure have raised questions about crowd management, access arrangements and the mobilisation of residents ahead of major political gatherings.

Residents interviewed by The Daily Whistle said the large turnout was partly fuelled by rumours of a KSh1,000 payment to attendees.

However, it remains unclear who originated the claims or whether any payments had actually been planned.

Questions have also been raised over the decision to restrict access to residents who had travelled to the venue, particularly after the gathering attracted a crowd significantly larger than anticipated.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the safety of children and other vulnerable people at heavily attended political events, especially when crowds become difficult to control.

For now, the key questions remain unanswered: Who organised the disruption? What triggered the confrontation outside the venue? Why did the crowd become so large? And who will be held responsible for the death, injuries and destruction of property reported during the incident?

Investigations are expected to establish what happened before, during and after the confrontation.
