Veteran Kenyan broadcaster Maina Kageni has opened up about his nearly three decades in the media industry, sharing insights into longevity, staying relevant and his passion for luxury cars.

Kageni’s reflections feature in a special edition of CNN International’s African Voices: My Drive, hosted by Lamide Akintobi.

The programme revisits some of the memorable conversations from the digital series, including a Nairobi feature involving Kageni and CNN correspondent Larry Madowo.

During the drive through Nairobi, Kageni reflected on his long-running broadcasting career and what has kept him motivated in an industry that continues to change.

“The day I wake up and I feel like I'm going for a job is the day I'll quit,” Kageni tells Madowo.

The veteran presenter has spent more than two decades co-hosting one of Kenya’s most successful breakfast radio shows.

Maina Kageni on staying relevant

Kageni also discussed how he has managed to remain relevant to younger audiences despite the rapid changes in the media industry.

“We have to change our attitudes literally every three years or so. Otherwise, it will become irrelevant,” he explained.

The conversation also touched on Kageni’s well-known passion for luxury cars, particularly BMW vehicles.

“I’m obsessed with BMW X6, to be specific,” Kageni tells Madowo.

“The first time I saw it, I knew this is my car.”

Maina Kageni’s advice to aspiring broadcasters

Towards the end of the drive, Kageni shared advice with aspiring entertainers and broadcasters, emphasizing the importance of talent, consistency and dedication.

“You've got to have a talent. There's got to be something you're going to be doing that is second to none,” he said.
