Malaha Junction Tragedy: Wetang’ula Mourns Victims of Deadly Webuye–Kitale Road Crash

The National Assembly Speaker urges caution during the rainy season as Kenya continues to record thousands of road accident deaths each year.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has mourned victims of a deadly road accident at Malaha Junction along the busy Webuye–Kitale road, warning that road carnage remains one of Kenya’s most pressing public safety concerns.

The tragic crash, which occurred at the notorious Malaha Junction in western Kenya, claimed several lives and left many others injured, sending shockwaves through families and communities in the region.

In a statement, Wetang’ula described the accident as a painful reminder of the dangers facing motorists, pedestrians, and boda boda riders on Kenyan roads, particularly during the ongoing heavy rains that have made driving conditions more hazardous.

“Road carnage remains a serious concern for our nation, especially during this heavy rainy season. I urge all road users to exercise caution and vigilance, and call upon traffic law enforcers to strengthen safety measures to help prevent such tragedies,” said Wetang’ula.

The Speaker noted that the Webuye–Kitale highway is one of the busiest transport corridors in western Kenya, linking major agricultural and commercial centres. He said the Malaha Junction crash underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and responsible road use.

“The tragic accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road, which has claimed several lives and left many families in mourning, is a painful reminder that even one life lost on our roads is one too many,” he said.

Wetang’ula extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished those injured a quick recovery.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. I also wish those injured a quick recovery. May God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved families, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.

Rising Road Carnage in Kenya

The Malaha Junction tragedy is the latest in a series of fatal accidents that continue to raise alarm over road safety in Kenya.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, thousands of Kenyans lose their lives every year due to road crashes involving private vehicles, public service vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and pedestrians.

Official data shows that more than 4,000 people die annually on Kenyan roads, with pedestrians and motorcycle riders accounting for the highest number of fatalities.

Experts attribute most accidents to speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance, and weak enforcement of traffic laws.
Other Major Accidents

Kenya has witnessed several devastating road crashes in recent years that have claimed dozens of lives.

In 2024, at least 11 people died in a multi-vehicle collision on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.

Earlier this year, multiple road accidents reported across different counties claimed more than a dozen lives within just a few days, highlighting the persistent danger facing road users.

Safety experts warn that unless stronger enforcement and improved road infrastructure are implemented, road accidents will continue to claim thousands of lives each year.

Calls for Stronger Enforcement

Leaders and road safety advocates are now calling for stronger enforcement of traffic rules, installation of speed control measures, and increased awareness among drivers and pedestrians.

Wetang’ula urged motorists, boda boda riders, and pedestrians to observe traffic regulations and remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season when roads become slippery and visibility is reduced.
“Together, we must ensure that our roads are safe for every Kenyan,” he said.
